Hi! I'm extremely new to SONAR x2 Essential (just received it yesterday) as well I am not very computer savvy or educated in the field of computer gerontology. At the moment i do not have an external interface so i have been plugging my guitar directly into the sound card of my computer with an adapter . I press record and play, once that is done i play it back and there are loud erratic popping noises (2 or 3 each second)Im sooo new to home recording and i dont know what to doooo! as far as i know all my drivers are updated. OH! and my sound card is built into my mother board, which i think is ASUS. Thank you in advance!!

That is your problem. You need a sound card with decent drivers and you need a Hi-Z input for your guitar. I would get a sound card made for recording ASAP and not record anything until you do so.

Onboard sound chips that come with over the counter PC's are not good for recording with professional programs like Sonar. They lack the drivers, converters and hardware for recording guitar

That's your problem right there. SONAR doesn't support standard soundcard drivers, which are good only for system sounds and playing back simple audio files and the audio for DVDs/streaming video. SONAR only works with audio interfaces that use ASIO or WDM drivers (which can play more than one track of audio at a time, and record at the same time as well). So, you actually need a pro/semi-pro level audio interface to avoid those clicks and pops.

Hope you have lots of fun with Sonar.  Just as a tip, I'd suggest checking out all the Sonar videos on YouTube, especially the ones from Cakewalk.  For me, it made a tremendous difference getting to grips with this brilliant bit of software!

Be sure to research your interface well. There are tons of threads here on the forum discussing this topic.

Cheers.
