In a previous verson of sonar, for a render/mixdown,  i was able to select the master bus, and then file/export audio and would be prompted with the export dialog box, i have noticed in X2a (maybe even in X1) I get an error message similar to "no audio selected" when I try this. So I have been selecting all of the tracks and hi-lighting the time range , then file/export audio etc...  By selecting all of the tracks and exporting, does this still include the master buss? Cuz I have exported indivdual tracks from time to time for various purposes not wanting them to go thru the master bus, however when I render/misxdown I want them to go thru the master bus.
 
 
So my question is: everytime I "Export" does this include the master bus?

i've seen that message sometimes when there are no audio-clips on any track..
like if I've used only VST-instruuments and none of them are frozen

If you select the master bus and no other for export and if all your audio goes through that buss that is what you will get. You don't need to select any tracks in the TV or a time line selection. 

If I select only the master bus, i get a message say something simlar to "no audio select" and am not able to export. So I must be missing a step or something. this is why I select all the tracks.

I am not at my DAW but I think you need to select "Entire Mix" to get everything that is going through the MASTER bus
 
If there are any tracks/busses you want excluded simply MUTE them in Track View and then export the "Entire Mix" (Which will go through the MASTER)

IIRC, selecting 'entire mix' will sum all busses and tracks together for the export,  which could change the levels of your busses in the export, whereas selecting 'bus' allows you to specify a particular bus to be the source for your export.

I've received that same 'no audio is selected' message as well - in my case, it's been when I didn't have the track view window active (I had the consolve view active) - once I clicked on the track view window to make it the active window, that message went away and I didn't have to highlight all individual tracks. 

If all your tracks output to a master bus and your master bus outputs to an audio card, you can also select the audio card as your export source, which is what I always use.

I've always just done a select all and chose Entire Mix. Is there a better way?

I always just click on the tracks.... highlight one or more containing audio....

all of my DAW's give me the options of some presets, so I choose WHAT YOU HEAR.... click OK

If you get that error than something isn't right with how the project is set up. I would check that all tracks end up going through the master buss. The way Sonar allows routing its not unreasonable to find a track or a buss that is routed to the main outs. I have been selecting the master buss for many years and it has never failed.    

If you select "Tracks", you Export will only contain the selected Tracks.

Ditto for Busses - whatevever's selected will be exported

With Entire Mix, what gets Exported is dependant on your routing. If for example you have only set up one Master Bus and all your other Tracks & Busses feed through it, you'll get the entire mix exported.

If you have one or more additional busses feeding outputs 3/4 & 5/6 etc on your interface, you'll get a 6dB increase for each additional pair. This is quite a common scenario for setting up alternative headphone mixes

Your other option, and the one that I use exclusively when I want my entire song Exported is "Main Outs".


In order to make sure everything is included, I always start by doing a Select NONE (ctrl + shift + A)
