  • Oh my goodness... I think I may actually understand how automation works in X2 now.

My somewhat hasty notes on the matter.

AUTOMATION

Click the Write Automation button of the tracked to be altered (if it is a Plug In parameter being changed open the Plug In's GUI and click the Plug In's Write Automation button). Start playback (spacebar or the play button in the Transport Bar). Do NOT arm the track for recording or press the record button in the Transport Bar... just start playback. As the project plays adjust the desired parameter(s). When you are done making the adjustments stop playback and click the Write Automation button again to disable it. Start playback again and the adjustments will happen automatically. Now you can open the Automation Lanes on the track(s) and view/adjust the automation as needed. To change which automation parameter is being displayed click the Automation Lane dropdown menu and choose which paremeter is to be displayed. To view other parameter's automation lanes click the + sign. The next parameter on the list will be displayed. This new lane can be changed to another parameter's view by clicking the that lanes dropdown menu. There is also a graphic control of the parameter being used in the Take Lane's Track Pane window. This can be used to write automation for that parameter by clicking the lane's Write Automation button and adjusting the graphical control. In the Track View portion of the Take Lane the parameters for the chosen effect can be adjusted by manipulating the automation nodes. If you are automating a plug in/synth effect that effect will appear in the Take Lane dropdown manual along with all it's various parameters.

May not be the most in depth knowledge but at least I can bloody well do it now. I knew what automation was. I kind of knew how it work... but I could never ACTUALLY use it. I always just set it and forget it.

Hope you are all having a good day. Cheers.

Hiya, Jonesey. Yeah, I'm feeling pretty happy about this one. It had been eluding me for a VERY long time.

Hi Beep. Well done dood ;-)

So, now that you understand Automation, how are you finding the Automation lanes? Personally, I find em to a be great feature and I even turn off the ghost in the main clip so that I can only see and edit the automation curves/nodes from the lanes.

That's just me though :-)

Hi, Synkro. Thanks. I really don't have much to compare them to as my automation adventures have been pretty much limited to adjusting gain/volume envelopes in a very crude way. Essentially just turning sections of clips up or down using the nodes. I'm also not going to be doing anything with my new found knowledge just yet. Gonna keep my head down and slowly work through the manual every day until I can't stand it anymore. I've only got... oh about 1600 pages left. lol

However the lanes do look very useful. I'm just happy I can now mess with stuff on the fly. Should be able to make some cool stuff happen with all that and it'll certainly be easier than constantly stopping and starting playback while I screw around with the nodes. Now I just gotta learn how to map things to my controllers quickly.

In the light of a new day I'm now starting to come up more in depth things I want to test out. Like I'm wondering if I enable Write on a Lane with playback stopped then type in a parameter number if the lane will make the change. That would be nice.

Anyway... lots to learn and mess around with. Just getting some tea in me and then gonna get back to it. Cheers!

If not using a preset control surface, just (right?) click on a slider, click remote control, move and learn whatever controller and it will work the slider.

Hi. Thanks. I figured that out the other day but some things don't seem to have a Right Click > MIDI Learn option. My Oxygen 25 seems to have a couple controls that don't want to map either for some reason. All the knobs I can map easily but the fader and IIRC the mod/pitch wheels were giving me a hard time. I just have to be patient until I get to that part of the manual and then cross reference with the Oxygen's manual. Today I'm gonna do the Working With Video tut. I won't be messing with much video right away but I figure I'll get it out of the way and see what kind of stuff it does.

Cheers.
