Gibson 'portrayed' William Wallace, not Robert the Bruce. By the way, Wallace was a Scots nobleman, one of those privileged people you despise, not a lowly farmer as depicted in the movie by the xenophobic drunken Australian. All those pitched battles with kilts (kilts didn't exist until the 17th Century btw, Walllace lived 400 years before that) and facepaint? Never happened. Except Stirling Bridge...and Gibson decided not to put a bridge in it...
