Well after about 50 hours solid over the last week I have completed my second sonata called window.  It's basically a portrait of what I see and hear everyday.  It contains all the elements of a sonata, including two themes in the exposition, modulation within the development phase and new ideas in the recapitulation.  There are a number of time signatures including 3/4, 4/4, 5,4, 6/4, 5/8, and 7/8,.  It includes found sounds and every sonic art's technique that I could muster but not varispeed too many glitches.

Thanks in advance Ben

It was very interesting and imaginative. The melody starting at 1:23 was very good. There was a nice atmospheric industrial sound world, though some sounds  starting at 3:53 were a bit hard to listen, though that might be the goal. I think it might be a good idea to shorten it a bit as in some places there might be a bit too much repetition, though I have a bit short attention span so I might be wrong. Good for films too I believe.

Thanks Kakku, repetitive is sort of the aim for this sort of stuff, although I did try and varispeed some of it for that very reason but it introduced too many glitches.  Yea there is a couple of things I tried to bury in the mix, as George Harrison use to say "will bury" in the mix.

All the industrial stuff, is granular, well mostly the 2nd part of the development stage is just two samples which I arranged into a rhythm.

Thanks, Ben

I agree with Kakku that parts of it are a bit repetitive with little dynamics or variation aside from the background sounds.  I realize it's not meant to represent a "real" group of musicians, but there is melody, harmony and rhythm, so...   That said, I do like some of the themes you've included - I can imagine them being their own pieces!

Thanks Steve, I hear you, dynamics are probably not my strong suite and is perhaps something I need to work on, in fact I will work upon them.  The repetitiveness is also something I have to work on.  And I will do this by pulling apart Beethoven sonata, this seems to be the best way for me to learn stuff.  I suppose I was more interested in showing my technical side with the ability to incorporate my knowledge of form and music theory.  In that regard it is a complex piece, morphing from it's parent key of A major, to e minor in the exposition, then landing in f# minor the relative key of A major for the first stage of the development, which morphs to c# minor.  Finally landing back to A Major with the recapitulation.  Then there is the multiple time signature's too.

The other thing I should mention, which might make a difference, is I designed this piece as a visual sonata, huh, here he goes again! So the piece is really a reflection of the scene that greats me from my window daily.  I've done a number of video recordings and I'm putting together a video sampling project as we speak.  I'm starting to think along the lines of a digital impressionist sonata, so it's a new form and with all new forms it takes some time to nail all the components.

Hey Ben

I also commented on SC. I love the turns that this takes. A lot of creativity went into this!! I love it love it!

You want me to crit or no?...If you want it to be a little more theatrical...maybe add some reverb...could be me I'm on headphones right now and you knwo headphones don't bode well to judge verb....to me though on these headphones it sounded a bit dry...not a lot...nothing serious.

Thanks starise it is dry, just dabs of verbs, it as the flavour that fell when mixing.  But thanks for taking time to crit.

That's quite the opus, Ben.  Post chaos in the modern, industrial world.  I agree with Starise, a lot of creativity went into this.  Very interesting!

Thanks Lynn, yep I think this is my first Opus, in terms of the classical idea and I think I have a few more to come.

I could see this over a stop motion-ish type, some in real time, some in double or triple time video, though from a static view.  Very creative and a pleasure to listen.  Some small touches here and there with the mix might enhance but that is something for you.

Thanks for sharing.
