If you would like Gibson to make Sonar open source, please add your vote here.

Making Sonar open source would engender goodwill for the Gibson name. It would provide audio professionals, semi-pros, and amateurs a tool over which they could exercise greater control. As an open source tool, Sonar could potentially become the most-used, most-popular DAW in use. The market for DAW software is undergoing a state of flux. This could be the next step.

some are saying that "no one will buy it, stop kidding yourself"
others are saying "it must be sold, they won't just walk away from it"

both cannot be true.

I think microsoft should buy it, just as Apple bought Logic.
The basic version can be included with windows (as it is with GarageBand and Mac), then millions will upgrade to Sonar when they need more functionality.

There has always been a strong relationship between cakewalk and microsoft- a commitment, it seems.
I have plenty of criticism of the microsoft corporation, but i still see this as a sensible arrangement.

Windows 10 is actually pretty great, and i think sonar is running better now than at any time prior.

I think open source might be the best hope.

It's true that companies don't like to give things away, but if no one wants to buy the company then what is it worth?

Buying the company and keeping it running means you have to pay the employees, which is probably the big problem.

But who knows, maybe they would sell the intellectual property to us?

you have to get the "logic" why apple bought both emagic and camel audio..
or roland and gibson bought cakewalk...

in apple's case.. camel is "bundleware" for them.. ready made / dev'd instrument they modded a bit.. logic ? well they were after avid's business (I was in the trade at the time).. hence why they also made final cut pro, to go after the video side.. much like apple had visi-calc on apple, that bit of software sold shedloads of apple 2's.

much like I bought a job lot of games, 147 of the same title.. I didn't want it for the game.. but I did the un-damaged plastic covers..  that were / are a pain to get elsewhere.

What a waste of time.
Makes no business sense.
Let's start a petition to put screen doors on Russian submarines, that one has just as good odds.

Yes! Please help sonar and Cakewalk products! Sonar is a beautiful and functional program. Open-source will further refine it and finally there will be meaningful music software on this basis. I can not imagine a better starting point for the Open-source community in the development of music software. I have experience with other great professional music programs. This is how the Open-source community will be able to compete with these programs. And that's what the Cakewalk Sonar can now be completely unique.

I agree that making Source code available to the public is a good idea.  I also know it's also unlikely.

Since Gibson/Cakewalk has officially stopped development on all Cakewalk products, going open source is the only way to keep development moving forward.  They don't have to release the code under GPL if the want to keep their IP.  They can take another route (Like using an Apache license, or writing one of their own).

Sonar is an extremely underrated/powerful software that should be allowed to live.   It's last 30 years, let's keep it going.

People are trying to find solutions here. This idea may or may not be the answer but it's something. You're not helping with this sort of response.
