Hi,

I have been using sonar for a couple of years and there are things that i still struggle with, which i hope are just buried in menus somewhere, or have been staring me in the face for all that time. So if anyone can help with the following, id be grateful....

1) Legato in Midi?
2) Glueing midi clips together whilst playing (aka atari st cubase glue pen??)
3) Stopping a project not flipping the screen back to start marker . (stopping means i want to edit something where i stopped it, i dont want the bloody thing going back 40 bars). Drives me bonkers this one, especially lining audio up to the start of a bar.
4) A repeat clip function - eg repeat this clip ten times whilst playing a project.
5) auto zoom setting when opening up the piano roll editor to be just showing the clip, not 100 bars after it as well. Also zoom in on where the bloody notes are , not half way up the piggin page.
6) After recording a clip, can you get sonar to automatically select it?. Why is the older stuff still selected. I have processed/deleted many other clips instead of the one i have just recorded... wondering why my bass drum has gone missing or now has stereo delay on it etc. SUrely just recording something means that it should be selected?

I am hoping i am just a victim of bad default settings..

Thanks

S

1) Legato in Midi?

AFAIK is synth dependant. If it's there use the PRV edit filter to select "New value type..." where it will appear as a controller for selection

2) Glueing midi clips together whilst playing (aka atari st cubase glue pen??)

Not possible during playback AFAIK, Use bounce to clip with clips selected and transport idle.

3) Stopping a project not flipping the screen back to start marker . (stopping means i want to edit something where i stopped it, i dont want the bloody thing going back 40 bars). Drives me bonkers this one, especially lining audio up to the start of a bar.
Use Ctrl + space to do the opposite of your default. Set the default with the "Track View---Options---->On stop, rewind to now marker" menu option

4) A repeat clip function - eg repeat this clip ten times whilst playing a project.
Convert it  to a groove clip (Ctrl + L) and drag it out or copy it and use advanced paste (Alt+Ctrl+V) to specify the number of repetitions

5) auto zoom setting when opening up the piano roll editor to be just showing the clip, not 100 bars after it as well. Also zoom in on where the bloody notes are , not half way up the piggin page.
This is default behaviour for me. Not sure why you are seeing different. Template set up maybe?

6) After recording a clip, can you get sonar to automatically select it?. Why is the older stuff still selected. I have processed/deleted many other clips instead of the one i have just recorded... wondering why my bass drum has gone missing or now has stereo delay on it etc. SUrely just recording something means that it should be selected?

Not AFAIK, ctrl, shift + A will deselect all. I think that's just a personal preference setting though. I'd go mad if Sonar kept losing my selections.

I am hoping i am just a victim of bad default settings..

Thanks

HTH, perhaps someone else will help with the ones I don't know.

Not exactly sure what you mean by this, but from what I can tell, this should be simulated by slightly overlapping the previous and next note a bit.  Also there may be some synth settings that better support this, or maybe even creative use of portamento/pitch bend.
5) auto zoom setting when opening up the piano roll editor to be just showing the clip, not 100 bars after it as well. Also zoom in on where the bloody notes are , not half way up the piggin page.
I'm not an expert on this part, but with X2, you can now set the default editor PER clip.  Also, there's options to be able to 'fit notes/events' to area or something like that so that you only see where the notes actually are.g

I understand this one.  But, I don't think there's a fix.

thanks lads, at least it stops me from looking for it when it doesnt exist.

Legato is where you play in a midi sequence and the notes are lengthened to the next snap point or bar usually. Handy for arpegiators or playing samples with one touch off, or string arrangements.

I did stumble across a repeat function where you copy then paste special and define repeats. Still a pita.

On the prv view it is kind of like a track view as opposed to a clip view for me. My prv just scrolls and scrolls once it has got past the clip whilst playing.  So no editing midiparts whist playing.  Mine seems to not respond to selecting specific clips and will shw where the arrangement is playing or stopped, not over the clip.

Anyways thanks chaps. v helpful.

Any more for anymore on the prv and setting the editor to be clip based not track based?

cheers

Legato in MIDI? Get a keyboard and play the part into Sonar. You're not going to get good legato with staff or piano roll view without a lot of extra effort.

I could never figure out how to enter in bends on midi notes.

Well, its easy with a MIDI keyboard, just use the pitch wheel.

If you're entering it manually, then go into the event view and enter a pitch event. Note the value depends on what your synth has set as the pitch bend range.

In the PRV...........

  1. Show the controller lane
  2. Click on the lane edit filter and select "New Value Type".
  3. From the MIDI event type window select "Wheel" from the "TYpe" choices
  4. Draw the controllers as required in the lane

For legato there are at least three things you can do that I am aware of:
1) Take Daveny5's advice and play it yourself. This might just be the best option.
2) There is a Cal you can run. On the menu go to Process>Run Cal. There is one called Legato.cal. Tweak the setting a bit and see if you get the results you are after.
3) Quantize. On the menu, go to Process>Quantize. There is a check box for Note Durations. This may also work, although I haven't used it myself.

Good luck!

I don't know why I could never get the pitch bends to work before and I'm sure I was doing that. Maybe it's because this time I just experimented with TTS-1. Since Daveny5 mentioned that some synths operate differently.

Just one question. That box that moves up and down as you move the pointer up and down. What is it called? Right now it's grey and I'm guessing with white letters. It is not ledgable. if I know what it's called, maybe I can make it ledgable.

At any rate, thanks for that. Now I can finish a midi I was making as well as write out leads for my original stuff.
