Forgive my ignorance please.  Been away from DAW music for a number of years, just installed X2 and trying to pull up the Kontact player.  First, let me say that I can open the Kontact player as standalone and it plays just fine, just can't get sound through X2. What is the midi routing that will work?  I've loaded an instrument with a simple instrument track.  Set the input on the track to omni and output is defaulted to Master.  No signal.  Also tried inserting a midi track and setting it to omni in, output to Kontact, the Kontact track output to Master, still nothing.   I'm guessing there's a checkbox somewhere that I'm missing.  Any ideas?

I've recorded audio tracks today with no problem, only the midi routing is giving me a headache.

Thanks
Steven

To isolate the problem, with the Kontakt Instrument as a simple insturment track:

1-Try to use the keyboard in the Kontakt player.  Click notes with the mouse and see if you hear anything and if there is a signal on the track meter.  If the Kontakt player meter shows a signal but no sound comes out through Sonar, i would think you have an issue with routing the track.  Be sure the track goes to Master, Master goes to you main outputs, the faders are up, and there is nothing muted or soloed.  Also, be sure you only have one instrument loaded into Kontakt.  Why?  Because if you keep loading instruments without closing others, it can be quite confusing which are active, which are assigned to which MIDI channels, etc.  Best to just try to get one thing working.
2-If #1 works, the try to open Staff view for the Kontakt track and use the pencile to put a few random notes around the staff.  Then play the track and see if those make sound.

Let us know what happens and maybe we can go from there.  Good luck.

BHy the way, be sure to select a generic sound in Kontakt that plays all across the keyboard (like electric piano or something).  If you have a weird sound with a slow attack or that is limited to a small range of notes, that could confuse things.

Hi Steven,

Regardless of the MIDI routing you have chosen for your simple instrument track, when you go to PRV for this track and you left click on the piano keys to the left, do you not hear a sound from your synth?

Sorry Konrad, I clicked submit post same time as you :)

No worries, synkotron.  My PC actually locked up before I could add something anyway.  (By the way, if I were not already The Mighty Konrad, I would want my name to be synkotron.  I don't know how you came up with that, but it is an awesome name.  It is even better than my second choice for a name: Bala, The Monkey God.)

Steven, Can you drag a little wav or mp3 into an audio track in Sonar and hear it when you hit play?  I just want to make sure your entire audio output is not missing or else we may end up chasing the wrong problem.

Thanks for the replies.  I should have have mentioned that I did use the mouse to click the virtual keyboard in Kontact and it does play.  I had not tried penciling in notes in the staff view, but yes, that does work.

What confuses me is that if I close Sonar and open Kontact as a standalone, it plays fine from my RD700 keyboard.  So, something is not routed correctly in Sonar.  I went into preferences and made sure under midi devices the FP is checked for input and output.  The only other thing listed here is Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth, and it is unchecked.

I also ran all these tests using Dimension Pro as well, yielding the same results.  Just now I installed the X2a patch but nothing with midi changed.  This is getting more than frustrating for what should be the simplest of things.

Thanks again for helping!

The Mighty Konrad, yes, I've been recording some audio tracks as I test all this and audio works great, just this midi problem...

Thanks

Must come up with nickname now.

Sounds like MIDI input echo.

In Preferences > MIDI > Playback and Recording > Playback

I always make sure that I have "Alwaus echo current MIDI track" checked. That way, which ever track I click on to give focus, the MIDI notes from my controller will reach my soft synth.

I hope that helps :)

LOL, Konrad, I chose that name in 2000 when I first started to publish my home made stuff on MP3 dot com. Took me ages to find a name that wasn't used by anyone else and I felt, at the time, that it was important. No google back then either, I don't think, or it was its early days. Each name I chose, and there were many, was already in use. Eventually, I made up this name, did a search, and it is the Swedish spelling of a scientific piece of kit for acceleration electronic particles.

There is a Swedish guy, Nick Bostrom, a written word artist who also uses the same artist name, and I contacted him at the time to make sure he was cool with me using the same nick name. He replied in the positive and so I stuck with it. I even registered my nick name with one of them online artist registers and searched there too of course.

As it happens, I have since come across another musical band with the same name. I don't know how I missed that one. But if you google synkrotron you either get a million Swedish scientific pages, Nick Bostrom's page, or my music, so I'm sticking with it until someone complains in writing.

Sorry for that... back on topic ;-)

Hey, Steven, You can have Bala, The Monkey God, Zorch, or D-Ray (short for Death Ray).  I am not using them. :-)

Synkrotron, that was it.  Thanks very much!  I figured it was just a check box somewhere, and now I know.

Konrad, as tempting as Zorch is, I'm going to continue giving it some thought.  This is serious business, you know, so don't want to rush into something.

Thanks again guys.
