If the box is not found when connected try a different cable/port.

It should be found.

Make sure to restart after uninstallint. And after the device is found, to verify all is well.

Make sure the FTU isn't connected to a USB3 port (typically blue).
Aside from Z series Intel chipset motherboards, USB3 is provided via 3rd-party add-on controllers.
The FTU/8R won't work when connected to these controllers.

Thanks for all of the advice.  I disabled the onboard sound and downloaded the driver that jm24 linked.

No issues for about a week with stability.
