  • Huge problem with Sonar X2a! Can't get midi to playback!

I can't seem to get any soft synths to play a midi track I wrote in Fruity Loops. It's really pulling my hair out.

Here's how I did it.

1. Exported a midi file from FL Studio
2. Open Sonar X2a, inserted any soft synth (Dimension/Ezkeys/AddictiveKeys/StringSection)
3. Imported the midi file onto the midi track of the soft synth.

There's midi activity but there's absolutely nothing from the audio track. Also, before I imported the midi, I did a test with my midi keyboard to see if the soft synths are working. They do but once I import the midi, it'll stop working. Doesn't help if I remove the midi or use any other midi track that I have.

I've tried changing the midi buffer to 128, prepare using 500 milliseconds buffer trick, using different soft synths, different midi files but still not luck.

Also, this has never happened to me and it recently occurred after I installed the latest 2a update. It's becoming a huge brick wall in the progress of my project.

Would love to hear your thoughts on this,
Thanks

1. Some string patches only play a certain notes. Try another patch
2. Make sure soft synth's MIDI tack and all other tracks associated with that soft synth are routed correctly.
3. Your buffers have nothing to do with it
4. Make new midi notes to see if its plays. This will rule out the exported midi from FL

Did you set the output of the MIDI track to the softsynth track?

I would suggest you look at the event list for the midi track, look for midi channels, to see what channels are used in the midi file, and also look for CC messages and such, usually found at the beginnings of midi files.

I frequently open midi files from the web in Sonar, and with all the tracks split out by channel I then go back and select instruments and assign channels per the recorded events in the tracks.  I also remove patch/bank assignments and any other beginning of each track weirdness with CC events and such.

Is it possible that the track has a midi volume setting at the beginning?
Events list may tell you this.

I've also had fun when I forgot about an envelope controlling volume that went to zero when I deleted it.

In the "event list", delete any RPNs or NRPNs and reset the midi, audio engine in the transport.

Hey guys, thanks again for the suggestions, I found out that Sonar's included soft synths was the problem, I could import a midi track to work with other 3rd party soft synths though.

1. Yeap, I tried it with some other  soft synths like TruePianos, EzKeys, Trillian but worryingly not any of Sonar's Dimension, String Section or Rapture. (I did go through a couple of patches with them to check.) Weird.

2. Midi tracks are all routed correctly, I've triple checked it. Here's how it's routed.

I've inserted the soft synth as 'All Mono Outputs' plus the midi track. Before I imported the midi file, I ran through on the piano roll to check if there's signal, there is.  Moving on, seeing as I'm using a pre-recorded midi file, the input of the Midi track is set to Omni, outputs set to the two mono channels of the soft synths that I'm using. The synth's mono channels are routed to Master. I hit play, the midi track levels seemed to work but there's nothing from the synth's mono channels.

3. I tried recording new notes with my midi controller, it works well even with Sonar's soft synths but I'm still worried as to why I'm not being able to import midi and get them to play.

I've set it to the two mono channels of my soft synths.

Hello, I took a look at the Event Viewer. I tried removing the CC messages such as RPN, Control, Wheel, and Patch but it still no luck.

Haddox

Removed it but it still doesn't work.

Guitarpirma

Did that, still no luck. :(

So far, I've found out that it works for one of my 3rd party soft synths but not for Sonar's String Section, Dimension and Rapture. Weirdly, before I imported the midi track in, it works but not after. Also, even if I deleted that midi track and tried playing something on my midi controller, there's nothing from the synth's mono sources at all, just the midi track.

Hopefully, I'm not confusing anyone here,

Best regards,
John

You supposed to have MIDI track and Audio track. Do not insert Soft Synth per channel as you would with effects. Insert instrument from the top menu and create 2 tracks- midi and audio and make sure your audio track output is set to master. Input- from Softsynth.

Yes, maybe you misunderstood my post but that was exactly what I did before importing the mid file.

Apologies if my explanation with the original post seemed a bit too messy and confusing.
