I have at some time had this working, so I don't know what's changed, but...

I'm using X1 Producer

My Softsynths are coming out of/through ASIO4All.

I'm trying to add some vocals to these midi-softsyth tracks.
The input options on my Vocal track only show me ASIO4All. (to which my mic isn't connected (it can't it's just a bit of software) and so nothing is coming in from the mic)

I go to pref's: -  I can see my Roland UA-25 (which my mic is plugged into) listed in devices, under the ASIO4All, but it's greyed out. I can't select it.

The only way I can select it is to untick ASIO4All (input & output) and then I can tick the UA-25. I have to restart Sonar.

I do this. I go to play my track. No sound. I can see the levels on the midi tracks going up & down, but no sound. 

I go back to Pref's, & now the ASIO4All devices aren't even listed - they've gone completely. And the system seems to be trying to play my Softsynths out of.through the UA-25. I don't even know if this is possible or makes any sense, but anyway, there's no sound.

All I want is to have my softsynths playing (and it worked when they were assigned to ASIO4All, so that's good enough for me) and to be able to record my vocal through my mic. But I can't seem to have both at the same time.

I'm sure I'm being thick, but my life's too short to spend any more time with Sonar trying to figure it out & get it to work.

Any help or suggestions would be very, very much appreciated.

Why are you using ASIO4All? Do you have a second audio interface on your system like onboard audio or something? If that's the case, ASIO only supports one device at a time, so you have to use either the onboard audio or the UA-25, so you should be using the UA-25. Once you are set up to use the UA-25, make sure the track output is routed to the physical output of the UA-25 or to a bus that is routed to the physical output.

If you have the UA25, it has a native ASIO driver.
There's no need to install/use ASIO4ALL, it's just "wrapping" the WDM driver to make it appear as an ASIO driver.  An additional (unnecessary) layer.
I'd uninstall ASIO4ALL and make sure you've got basic sound coming out of the UA25.
Go to Control Panel>Sounds>Playback... and make sure the UA25 is selected as the default Playback device.
Open Windows Media Player... and play an MP3 or a CD.
Can you hear the MP3 or CD?


Also, check to make sure the Master bus is set to playback thru the UA25.
If you've changed drivers/etc, you may need to manually set it to the UA25.

Jim, that was a marvelous explanation that saved me from typing the same thing.

Make sure your interface drivers are up to date, and as Jim suggested, get things working with the ASIO drivers from the interface used as the default output for your computer, and test it all out OUTSIDE of Sonar to start with - playing a tune through Windows Media Player is a great way to make sure the basic ASIO driver setup works.  THEN you can go into Sonar and work to get that working - but at least you would know that the computer and the interface are working together - and that any problems would be simply a matter of getting the settings right in Sonar.

For the settings in Sonar, it is quite important to make sure the Sample Rate in Sonar MATCHES the Sample Rate set in the audio interface user interface. 

Also, if you have audio glitches, try increasing the ASIO buffer size 64 to 128, to 256, etc, until the glitches go away.

Lastly, if this is a USB interface, make sure that either the interface drivers HAVE USB 3.0 support, or that you have the interface plugged into a USB 2.0 port on the computer.  My Presonus Audiobox 1818 VSL was possessed once when I plugged it into a USB 3.0 port.  (I think they fixed that, but I have just left it where it was once it was working).

Thanks all for your replies. Not really knowing what ASIO is, I had no idea my UA-25 'had one' as well. I thought I was using the ASIO driver to help with latency between pressing a note on my keyboard and the synth sound being triggered in Sonar, and was just using as UA-25 as an analogue to digital converter to get my mic input into the pc. 

I'll wire up the UA-25 to my amp and give it a go!
