The official release of Win8 was OCt 26th-That is LESS than 2 months, for MS windows???? And already it's the best thing ever???
FWIW, I found many more negative reports than positive-So I will wait..............YMMV . I may install it on my new laptop just to do some tests.

Do your own searches though, See for yourself-That's what I did and was amazed. I'll stick with Win 7x64 for now. Just MHO

I would take negative reviews with a grain of salt. Most reviews I have read are based on first impressions that lack insight into just what Windows 8 offers. Most are stuck on the Start screen and metro apps. This kind of review is superficial at best and misleading at worst. 


Perhaps you haven't noticed the postings here on this forum about Windows 8. I think you would be hard pressed to find a really negative post from an actual user. What I have seen is a general consensus that it is even better than Windows 7.  I can't comment on that aspect myself but I trust those that have made the comparison. Further I have read everything Noel has written on the subject that is meant for us to read. My conclusion is that he is very much in favor of Win 8. He has offered insightful reasons why too. 

There is no rush but thinking that its too early is a foolish notion. Windows 8 has already been well tested for over the greater part of 2 years. It was offered for anyone to try out and report back. Different versions were tested thoroughly. The version available at this writing is a solid stable and great OS.

By waiting all one does is postpone having a really good time with a great OS. This is not like it use to be with early adopters but just the opposite where we are the beneficiaries of all the time it was tested by the public. They were the early adopters. I was among them.   

Clearly you will do what you will do but your reasoning for not upgrading is flawed. Nor should others think it is sound.

I toatally disagree. My logic is flawed? Wow, I would have expected better from you-Guess I just learned a sad lesson.
 
How many daw users in the world John? How many would you say have gone to Win8? I would guess less than 1%.
How many different configuarations do you think exist in the world of daw users?

Does the upgrade know if you are 64bit?  I have Win7 64bit and when I went to the Windows site, I did not see a 64bit upgrade.  All I saw was a link to download the Windows 8 Pro update for $39.xx.  Does it automatically know your version and correctly upgrade you to 64 bit?

I was not going to upgrade becuase I have my system working perfectly.  But, for $39 it is worth considering.

The upgrade wizzer will NOT allow an alternate bit depth.

Thanks for this.  I googled the update and the info I found confirms that the updater reads whether you have 32bit or 64bit and then updates the bit version you have.  So thanks for helping me think through this.

I've used win7 for a while now since I upgraded from Vista, I found 7 to be less stable than Vista particularly when a lot of page/swap file activity is involved.


I push my machine fairly hard (3D rendering as well as music) and had more problems with 7 than I ever had with Vista so in all honesty, I was quite pleased to see the back of it :)


Win 8 is faster, not just a bit faster, a lot faster. for 3D stuff it's anything up to 30% faster and that saves me a lot of time when rendering animations. Stable? Yep, it doesn't fall over but you need to make a few tweaks to it if you are running on a desktop machine as everything is pretty much optimised for laptop users.


Most of the negative stuff I've seen is from people that don't 'get it' and think that the win8 is all tiles and full page apps and obviously because it's so different.


To get the best from it - try running it on dual monitors. That way you get to use/snap the 'metro' apps on one screen whilst using the other screen for other programs :) Installing Live mail restores pop mail and gets rid of the (awful) default mail app. You can remove superflous icons from the start menu by modifying the start menu folder etc etc


Win8 is very, very good

No problem-Sorry to have intervened in the thread

One of the best features in Win8 is the storage pooling. Being able to mirror drives for back up so easily and natively is a godsend for audio production. I never have to think about backing up ever again.

I REALLY appreciate all the input everybody. I know there are different opinions, but I value them all.  For me, I'm so happy with my system the way it is now, I think I'll stick with 7x64 for a while.
