What are the odds of a bricked system- one in about how many?

Your experience may be different from mine.

A year ago when I built my system, installing Acronis 2012 imaging software bricked it.

When I installed Acronis 2013 a few months ago it made my Windows Shell unusable.

When I installed the Windows 7 Logo Validation Suite, it's filter driver prevented me from installing Sonar.

All I can say is that my combination of customization makes it a bit risky to install system-level tools.

If you install Win 8 to a different partition, it will be a clean install to that partition, and you would have to install each and every application you wanted to run in Windows 8.

If you can run a backup of your system to an external drive (you should already have something in place for running and storing backups, right???), once you have a full image, run the Win 8 install as an update, choosing the keep all settings and applications option.

I have win 7 professional and was told at the computer store that this version will not update seamlessly. I am told that I will have to reinstall everything. Anybody else going from win 7 pro to win 8 that could confirm this?

Anyone deciding to wait on the Windows 8 upgrade... keep in mind that right now you can get the Windows 8 Pro upgrade for a mere $15 if you're upgrading from Win 7. Yes, it's legit...

If you're not upgrading from Win 7 but from XP or Vista, you can still get it for only $39.99...

But this promo period only lasts until January 31st. After that, the price will jump to almost 3 times as much.

Just thought you might want to know...

(you should already have something in place for running and storing backups, right???)

Naturally - two eSATA drives and two applications (Acronis and Retrospect) plus separate disconnected external drives (5 or 6).

Who wouldn't?

I have read about this as well, but I have no data.

Check on the Microsoft site for whether or not installing over Win 7 Pro is 'not' possible - per some local PC tech - he may have been incorrect, or unclear.  I would think there are several Microsoft created docs explaining what works and doesn't work for getting from Win 7 Pro to Win 8.  I think it's worth you having a quick look at the official commentary on it from Microsoft.  They have a much larger investment - your computer guy just has to say 'oops' whenever they are wrong (usually leaving you with hours of needless work to redo).

Merry Christmas, I just took a quick look at the System Requirements page on Microsoft, for upgrading to Windows 8.  Here is that text:

To install the Windows 8 Pro upgrade, your PC must be running Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 Consumer Preview, or Windows 8 Release Preview. If your PC is running Windows 7, Windows 8 Consumer Preview, or Windows 8 Release Preview, your files, apps, and settings will easily transfer to Windows 8 Pro. If your PC is running Windows XP or Windows Vista, you'll need to reinstall your apps. Some features such as touch might require a new PC

Well, I decided to get the boxed upgrade DVD to Win 8 Pro from Amazon for $49.
That way I can get the cheaper price now and still wait a while.

I probably will wait until SP1 comes out, though, then install this 'in-place' and upgrade to SP1.

I'm going to start backing my sh!t up.
Can i buy this $15 W8 now and use it later?
