omg, it seems too good to be true.
I feel,...... scared.

my machine has W7pro (for developers) I had it built by a geek i know.  I don't know what "For developers" means in practical terms, but i know it cam with an actual install disc!!

I'm going to start backing my sh!t up.
Can i buy this $15 W8 now and use it later?

crazy

Well, I think it is indicative as to the extent that MS wants adoption of Windows 8. That would make it more attractive to buy Windows phones and Surfaces, etc.

Everywhere I go - hospitals, libraries, financial centers, stores - if I see a Windows machine, it is usually running XP.

btw, it says it's 39.99 no matter what version you currently have
Check the links I provided to see how to get it for $15... that's only for upgrading from Win 7.

And yes, you can buy it now and install later... here's a link for info on that...

wait, are you saying that i can go from 7 to 8 without having to reinstall all my programs???!!!!!
and for $40??

is this for real?
Yes, or you can get a boxed windows 8 Pro 'upgrade' at Best Buy for $50.
Happy I did not do the 'clean install'. Saved a lot of time and the upgrade was a breeze to install... Now (with Win 8 Pro), my system runs smoother... Heck, even my HDD seems to make less noise..

Anyone deciding to wait on the Windows 8 upgrade... keep in mind that right now you can get the Windows 8 Pro upgrade for a mere $15 if you're upgrading from Win 7. Yes, it's legit...
http://thenextweb.com/mic...ows-8-pro-for-just-15/

The offer is legit only if you have purchased a new PC with Windows 7 pre-installed between June 2 and Jan 31. Initially it was widely reported that you could just enter fake data (make up an imaginary computer model, purhcase date etc.) in the online form and get a promotion code that would reduce the price of the upgrade download. More recently people are reporting that they need to input the authorization code from the Win 7 on their recently purchased computer in order to make it work. How Microsoft is validating that codes and recent lots of computers match is a question. You may still be able to trick the upgrade assistant into delivering a cheap copy of Windows 8 for a PC bought prior to the offer window, but the license would presumably not be legal since it is obtained by fraud.

Ah ha... okay, well that's a bummer... but then $39.99 isn't bad either.

I just ran the Windows 8 upgrade assistant that shows incompatabilities in my system for Windows 8.
I'm not sure how reliable it is because it claims PerfectDisk is not compatible, but Raxco says it is. Among the other things I have that it complains about are:

Guitar Rig 4
Visual Studio 2010
Acronis 2011 (and, since neither 2012 nor 2013 versions work for me this is a non-starter)

So, I will cancel my Amazon order for Win 8.

Be a little careful about what the Win 8 update adviser claims is compatible hardware.

It tells me I have no incompatible/questionable hardware. However, on checking the manufacturer's websites for drivers, there are no Win8 drivers for my HP laser printer as yet.

More pertinently from a DAW point of view it didn't pick up on my M-Audio Midisport s a problem.

It seems M-Audio have yet to release any Win8 drivers at all. They were very slow off the mark (as in years late) with XP 64bit and Vista 64bit, slow off the mark with Win7 and seem not to have learned from the experience. :-(

I got a 'paid version available' for Guitar Rig from the assistant (I am Running Guitar Rig Lite)... I just fired it up under Win 8... Seem OK..
