• SONAR
  • Any chance Cakewalk could be sold to another party (That would keep it going)? (p.5)

If they sold it to PreSonus, I'd be really happy. Studio One is my 2nd (by a long-shot) DAW,

Oh good lord NO! I couldn't disagree more, Hell no, not presonus. Their support is absolutely shocking, and let's be honest, their products are definitely sub-par. I've been using them for a while as a cheap and cheerful mobile solution, but I've finally given up after over a decade. I'm tired of there being zero repairs support, "new" driver and firmware versions that drop huge major features from the interfaces, buggy drivers, noisy electronics and so on.
If it had to be an electronics firm buying them, I'd rather see RME or Focusrite do it.

It's a really sad and shi**y day. I've been using Sonar for my own (non-work-based) projects, and occasional sequencer based things in the studio since forever, I've had a go with everything that's out there, and whilst practically none of them got the audio editing workflow right, Sonar got it less wrong than the others, and had a few really nice touches up it sleeves that I miss in every other DAW.

yeah, I said in I cant remember...this post..or one of my other trhousand posts.......ha........I tried studio one before oinvesting in sonar...and presonuses support was soooo bad....I went for sonar

i think they already tried but didn't succeed - any sale attempt would have come before publicly closing down

Uh-huh.  And of course you have a source for this info......?

Waves should buy it and make a powerful console DAW based on Waves plugins...

I was just considering renewing my Rolling update since I'm a year behind. Should I wait and see...?

I'll add to the chorus of hopefuls / skeptics.

Most of us long-time users pushed through some pretty bad iterations of Sonar i.e. the "X" ages. I remember being frustrated having to transition from Pro Audio 9 to Sonar because I was so used to the old workflow. Alas, I stuck it out, as I always have with Cakewalk.

Cakewalk was my first DAW and their Windows support kept me recording through military deployments, live shows, and random bedroom studios.

Now, I have a nice studio and have built everything around Sonar. Although I am sure Studio One will probably be adequate for my needs, learning the subtitles of a new platform makes me cringe a bit.

I hope Microsoft or another cash-fat company comes along and saves Sonar. The user base is so deep and so committed to this platform it would be a boon for anyone not named Gibson.

FYI, Gibson is selling their Memphis factory. Perhaps their wonky, overpriced guitars are the real culprit.
I lived in Memphis for a while and only a couple blocks from the Gibson factory - which is in a SWEET location just behind Beale Street. Slowly, the store started to stock awful Gibson studio monitors and other overpriced - cheaply made "pro audio" offerings. It seemed weird for a revered guitar manufacturer to offer such low-end  gear.

Lastly,

Long time Cakewalk users are a bit like Han Solo and the Millennium Falcon. We all know how to drive the hell out it and we know where all the bugs live. Sad to see a fully developed and loved platform succumb to poor management and lack of vision.

At this point, and if this past year is any indication, I am betting Oumuamua is probably going to crash into Earth anyway

As well as Music I am also big into 3D graphics. From the 90s I was using a 3D program called CALIGARI TRUESPACE. In 2008 something sort of similar to whats happening with Sonar happened to Truespace .. it then got sold to Microsoft.

After that it literally disappeared with some possible life in MS virtual worlds before it completely sank. Where it is these days in MS I have no idea. BUT there are still forums around for it and I think the install app turned up now and then on mag cover disks.

So just a word of caution re MS take over ..

I think the challenge for any buyer will be the way that Gibson have monetised the assets over the last few years probably to fund the debts of the whole group. My guess is that the income from the mega deals like Life Time Updates has gone to pay the debt leaving a forward revenue stream from subscriptions and projected sales that no longer cover the operating costs.

Basically the Cakewalk staff have been sold out to try and save the rest of the business.

The burden of Life Time Updates is a killer for any potential buyer. Honour it and they get no money, abandon it and lots of customers will walk...

I'm just hoping that a high profile Gibson guitar user or two joins the protest and publicly switches to another make.

Sonar has never been treated as one of the big DAWs...always gets 'honorable mentions' or none at all in the major music tech mags. The majority or articles are on the big DAWs and this does not generally include Sonar.

This may have had some bearing on yesterdays decision.

Music tech moves on and and something will fill the void if Sonar doesnt continue or the big ones will take more of the pie.

When Camel Audio Alchemy went tits up it was merged into Logic as an exclusive plugin. I guess I see a few possibilities:

1. Cakewalk could carry on independently without Gibson...
2. Sonar gets merged into maybe another DAW .. not sure if thats possible but the features could be merged
3. It just ends...
4. Or someone buys it...how about Native Instruments? They have not dipped their feet in the water with hosting a DAW

Yup..personally im gutted...but I will carry on with it until we know its final fate!

rolandcloud.com is a really new, creative way to turn music software into a cloud service. They should have Sonar as a DAW there :)
