I recieved a file from a friend that is running Sonar X2 Producer as I am.  He was having latency issues that we thought we had worked out(or at least worked around).  I opened the file, and where I have never had any latency issues on my system before, now had major latency issues.  But only on his file.  All my other recordings are fine no latency.  What we found is that if we turn off all prochannel effects it stops and recording durring playback is perfect.  Turn Prochannel on even on just one track and the latency is back in the input channel.

I can reload one of my files and run unaffected with all the effects running that I desire.

I figure it has to be a setting on the particular preferences for the recording.  We thought we had set all paramaters the same.  Without going into our full systems is there something simple that we are just missing?

I believe some of the effects can really jack up latency, (from memory of reading prior posts).  One of those, IF memory serves, was Perfect Space.  Something about effects that do 'look ahead' processing.

There is a way to conditionally load effects when you open a project - I think you might hold down the shift key while opening the project - please look that up for confirmation first, but anyways, you can use that technique to help you look for any effects that are so messing up your playback ability.

Could bit-depth of the recording have anything to do with it?  Or, perhaps it has to work harder if there were different sample rates used?  (I have no clue - just reaching for things for you to look at).

It would seem that a top to bottom examination of all of your settings is in order, as if it is working on his system, with the same effects and all, that it should work on your, unless something is indeed set differently between the 2 systems.

I hope that helps (doesn't feel like I really gave you anything of substance, but I tried),

Your correct Robert. Some Fx are not meant for real time recording. These type of efect that have buffers in them are meant for mixing as they require a larger amount of CPu than the other plugins that you can record in real time and monitor with.

Brent, that said, if you have a good sound card with good drivers, you should be able to set your ASIo buffer to 32 or 64 and the latency should go away in most cases.

Thanks Guy's! We have come to the conclusion that ProChannel is mainly for mastering.  Is that a safe asumption?  There is no latency when using basic Sonitus effects during recording.

What is crazy, is I can use ProChannel on all the busses I want during recording with no affect.  Just something I think we need to live with.

Thanks for the feed back!
