  • BEWARE! Waves updates v9.2; Sonar MAY LOSE your settings in current or past sessions!!!

I recently added a Waves bundle to my Waves collection. When trying to add the license, I was informed the licenser version needed an update to v9.2 (v9r7). This alone and on the surface isn't alarming, but what IS alarming is that X2 holds on to the exact version of plug-ins you use per session, meaning an upgrade to the Waves plug-ins will invalidate your current and past sessions' Waves plug-in settings. Maybe Sonar should have been made to ignore this 'version' and allow the newer version Waves plug-ins to be assumed as an update, not simply missing. NOTE: The newer v9.2 Waves plug-ins were found by X2, but X2 didn't realize these were the same basic plug-ins as before, and I don't know how to extract the v9.0 settings from X2 to import into the newer version Waves plug-ins. I've notified Waves about this as well, but Sonar thus far is the only DAW with this issue I've come across. CAKEWALK: PLEASE check this out before releasing X2a!! Thanks!!

So far, we solved this in 64-Bit Windows (not yet 32-Bit), thanks to Waves Tech Support: 1) Shut down Sonar. 2) FULLY uninstall WavesShell9.0 and search your harddrive for any instances of WaveShell9.0 dll's. Delete them all. 3) Run a Registry scanner to remove any traces of WaveShell9.0 4) Install the latest WaveShell9.2 or whatever the latest is. 5) Open Sonar. Do NOT open a session yet. 6) Go to Plug-In Manager in Sonar and re-scan for these plug-ins. Ensure that you see the plug-ins in the Manager. 7) Open a session and see if you get any errors for missing Plug-Ins. This seems to be an issue still for 32-Bit Windows 7. I've not been able to correct that yet. However, for me, I was able to open my sessions in 64-Bit Windows and save each Waves plugin's settings individually, then manually replicate those settings in 32-Bit Windows. Sonar should maybe have a "dump" feature that will go through all your plug-ins and individually save each's settings in a folder with the Track number and name, location (P or F for ProChannel or FX Bin), an integer for sequence in the chain, and the plug-in name. This could be useful if one needs to port over the mix to another DAW, such as Logic or Reaper.

I don't have any older versions of Waves plug-ins so I'm not having this problem. The problem I'm having is that every time I install a Waves plug-in it never shows up in Sonar and is not written to the registry. I have to uninstall all my Waves plug-ins, delete the reg entries for the ones in there and reinstall all the Waves plugi-ins again. I had to do this 4 times now because i have 4 Waves bundles. I'm curious if this is going to happen after you updated to V9.

Yeah Bob.
I just added 2 bundles this week and one last week.
The one last week went smooth.
This week after downloading the installer, checking off all the plugs I want to keep from previous installs and running it everything 'seemed' to go fine until I went to run the activation thingy.
It was removed during the install. I know for a fact I had it checked off because it's the first thing on the list.
I tried again with the same results.
Finally on the third try I decided to delete all my Waves plugs and start fresh. I checked off everything and before I ran the installer I double checked the Authorization thingy and it had un-checked itself somehow. I re-checked it an ran the installer. Everything was back up and running.
I'll have to remember to keep an eye on this if I ever need more Waves stuff.

Argggh! That should not happen unless the interface to the plug-in has changed thus invalidating the stored information in the project. :-(

Hmmm. I've updated every 9.x release and have never encountered the problems you speak of. Maybe because I did uninstall 8.x before installing 9.

Even after I un-installed and re-installed all My Waves, my pre-sets I had made are still there.
Just checked quickly on my GTR plug.

I'm not certain this would happen for everyone. Simply judging by the fix-list in the new X2a patch, I can quickly see there's probably 90%+ of the issues fixed in the patch have never occurred for me. That tells me you may or may not run into what I did here going from (involuntarily, I might add) 9.0 to 9.2 WaveShell. In my experience with Sonar, if you aren't having the issue, you're in luck!! Rejoice! And enjoy a free day back in your life on Cakewalk's dime. If you are have the issue, judging by the list of fixes in the latest X2a patch, I'm pessimistic at best that Cakewalk would be able to recreate 50% or more of the bugs out there, and I don't expect they will spend much time trying to.
