sharke is British, he's not a New Yorker.

Once you've been here 10 years you're officially a New Yorker, and I've been here almost 15 so that makes me a New Yorker and a half...

And yes, NYC is the center of the known universe.

Can I have your Britishness then?

That pretty much evaporated in a red, white and blue cloud of steam the first altercation I got into with an NYC taxi driver.

At least he got into the ambulance alive. All too frequently, police approach mentally disturbed people with guns drawn and feel justified in killing them if they get within reach, since there is now a deadly weapon (the one in their hand or holster), available to the psychotic. If I am ever acting that crazy, I would hope the police would keep their distance until unarmed help arrives. Our police are trained and equipped to combat criminals, not to assist the mentally ill.

Hmm,  The cops encounter many, many psychotic people in the course of a shift.  I think they do a pretty good job.  You don't hear about success stories, for instance how many suicides they've prevented.  And then there's the issue of illicit drugs.  If someone's acting psychotic because they over did the acid...you think it's the cops job to babysit them?

I overdid my acid washed jeans once.

Where were the cops then?

Or stopping drunk drivers, how many deaths have they prevented?  Or stopping speeding drivers,  major hassle if it happens to you, but how many deaths have they prevented by slowing people down?

I lived in Manhattan many years and I can imagine a front line cop sees more action in a week then most big city cops see in a year. This might just have been another incident at the end of a long day.

The only thing that surprises me about Sharke's account is the cops didn't keep the civilians away from the action.
