• SONAR
  • Layers - can't get them to work

The Help file says:

"If you enable a track's Show Layers option, Sonar stores the track's clips in separate layers whenever any of the following happens: .....You record over some pre-existing data while in Sound On Sound mode."

- I've enabled the track's Show Layers option.
- I have the project in Sound On Sound mode.
- I've selected Store Takes in Separate Tracks.

But every time a record the vocal Sonar overwrites what's there.

What am I missing here?

The layers won't show as layers until after the event. You do the recordings which stack on each other then click the layters button which should break them out.

Layers already showing will remain empty until you "Rebuild layers" from the right click menu.

Thanks FBB.  I'm still struggling.  So I leave layers off until I've recorded a second take?  'Rebuild layers' is where exactly?

(My own stupid fault for trying to get into this two weeks before it's abolished!)

Yeah leave them off till it's recorded but I'd use the rebuild layers command sparingly. Turning them on is oaky but the rebuild layers command should be "rearrange into some haphazard order".

Looking forward to the "takes" feature in X2.....

That seems like a step backwards from 8.5. In 8.5 you can loop record and watch the layers pile up.
That makes easy to, say, mark that take n:o 6 was bad, so you can delete it right away when youve taken the eleven takes.

Normaly I right click and choose Show layers, then right click insert layer. Did my loop record and watch the layers pile up. Never had any complain in this area.

Sonar X1 Epanded.

Can you? I didn't think anything has changed in that dept from earlier versions but it's been a long time since I used anything pre-X1. I haven't even had it installed for over a year.

Regardless,  the waveform being formed is still visible but as a large full track layer that then gets replaced by the next loop/take until recording is stopped then the layers display. Which is arguably better behaviour anyway or certainly for people like me.

By the time I'm on my 54th loop take trying to get it right any layer display is going to be so small as to useless by that time.

I thought layers only came into play when when you're actually loop recording.

Then you get exactly what Kalle is saying.

*** CORRECTION - you only get to SEE the individual layers when the you stop the transport = up until then, all you see is the current take you're recording.

Looping - is that what I've missed here?  I haven't had looping on as I didn't particularly want to stand at the mic and sing consecutive versions of the song without stopping.  I was starting and stopping record mode manually.

Not neccesarily. Layers still work without looping.

Each recording will go into it's own layer either stacked on top of each other in the single track view or into their own layer track when you click the show layers icon.

If you're not seeing that I'm not sure what's happening.
