The Help file says:

"If you enable a track's Show Layers option, Sonar stores the track's clips in separate layers whenever any of the following happens: .....You record over some pre-existing data while in Sound On Sound mode."

- I've enabled the track's Show Layers option.
- I have the project in Sound On Sound mode.
- I've selected Store Takes in Separate Tracks.

But every time a record the vocal Sonar overwrites what's there.

What am I missing here?

Jonesey and FBBoy, you guys are gonna grimace when you read this again...

"- I've selected Store Takes in Separate Tracks. "

You won't see layers if you have your record takes set for seperate tracks. Layers will only function if you have your takes set to the same track. Otherwise your takes get sent to...get ready...different tracks. :-)

ROTFL!

Sorry, I couldn't resist! You and FBBoy clearly know your way around Sonar and then some. I had to laugh when i realised neither of you hadn't picked up on that one. Sometimes you can't see the forest for the trees...

If not for some recently consumed pints, and I use the term "some" loosely, I likely wouildn't have seen it myself.

Note to self........ Read OPs carefully before jumping to conclusions......

In my defence your honour it also says it "overwrites what is already there" which shouldn't happen with the new tracks option either.

OK, very first post. I am using Sonar X2. I am following the video at Cake TV http://www.cakewalk.com/C...NARU.aspx/Master-Class 'Drum Production 1'. All is going fine. At 19:03 in the video, it is showing how to add layers to the track. Easy enough. But when I right click like they do on the video, I don't have an option to see track layers. I have as options "Notes", "7bit values", and "Fit Content", nothing more, nothing less. Any ideas?

Sounds to me like the video might be using X1. X2 now has lanes instead of layers.

Search track lanes in the help file but basically you need to "show take lanes" using the take lane icon toward the bottom left of the track header.

Awesome, you're a genius... or very knowledgeable at the least. Thanks FBB! Problem solved. Note to Cakewalk... update your videos so newbies like me aren't spinning their wheels learning about outdated features..
