when you insert the synth,make sure you check all audio outputs seperate tracks.

in each track there is an output when you click it it gives you all the outputs of bfd2.

you also need to set up the interface of bfd2 to channel every track to its own,
but you will still hear the bleed from the overheads,effects,exc.
inturn you will need to find a way to seperate these to different tracks as well.

im my humble opinion its a apain.
session drummer is easy,you just click the track and pick a seperate number.
even addictive drums is easier then bfd2.

bfd2 is pretty much set up your drums in the gui and not in sonar.
but i happen to like to add effects like T-racks to the snare,or reverb to the snare..plug ins which cost alot of money because they are professional.
not bfds interface with effects that come packed with it.

I'm sat in our conservatory - which has a pvcu roof - the sound of rain is amplified tremendously in here, so you can imagine what this sounds like.

You should record it and sample it (not in sfz format though) I bet it would sound great.

Charlie it really isn't that hard at all in BFD2, once you have BFD2's mixer set up the way you like you can save it as either a mixer preset or an entire preset, or better still just save them as sonar templates. 

If you read this thread from the start you'll have noticed that I posted a number of sonar templates to help Harpo and others out. 
I just checked and they're still there. Once you have all that then bouncing down to separate tracks is as easy as any other VST with the difference being (in my humble opinion) that the extra effort is well worth it when I hear the end result.
Session drummer is obviously easier as it offers far less in almost every sense.

steve,it sounds like your a pretty smart guy and have put some good effort into your findings.

im also glad you and bj are back on topic rather then starting your own personal messages in the middle of this thread.

i actually find alot of your posts very useful for myself in the future.
im greatful to you for posting your findings.

on the same coin though i will not ever beilieve this is as easy as any other vst to set up.
you even admit yourself this is complicated and it is.

i aslo cant believe these effects in bfd are top notch.
they are good,i will admt that.
but there not as good as t-racks or in some cases even sonitus reverb.

its clear to me now though that i was confused on how to set this up as its a case of me not paying attention and reading every post which is sometimes easy to over look when there is 35 posts.

though i may disagree with a few thngs here,its also a matter of opinion.
i have to respect yours as you have a deep knowlege of the program.

I think when I said it's a little more complicated I meant purely in the sense that it offers you many more routing options but the process of assigning BFD2 channels into sonar is exactly the same as in session drummer 3, EZdrummer, addictive drums and many other VSTi's, you simply click at the bottom of each channel strip and there you'll see all the various outputs that it can be sent to.  It's kind of up to you as to how you want to route them though.   

 
Feel free to try out some of my sonar templates, apart from the cocktail kit they are all stock BFD2 kits and to be honest you only need 2 of them as they are essentially all the same. I was having so much fun though I just got a bit carried away  
I started mangling the sound with some heavy effects and also automated the tuning on the kick drum just to show what can be done. None of the other drum VSTi's give you full automation over every parameter to my knowledge. It may sound like crap to you but I had fun making it 
They are for each kit with one being labelled "master" which just routes BFD2's master channel to a single stereo channel in Sonar. I decided to use both to illustrate that there is little difference in the overall sound when routing to a single stereo channel or all 32 mono channels and unless you want to use 3rd party efects there is no need to do so. 
 

Most of what I have leaned about routing came from this BFD2 Tutorial which I had to watch about 20 times cuz he's way to fast but there's a lot in there.
As you'll see if you open one of my templates I route channels into sonar mostly via an auxiliary in the BFD2 mixer.

As for effects I agree that better effects have come along since the birth of BFD2 but on it's release in 2007 there were few better and none I can think of that came as a set solely for drum production. I think the reverb is good and I was persuaded to buy the full version of overlouds breverb as the one that comes with BFD2 isn't the full version. 
There are definitely better verbs out there though. 

I'm interested to see whether or not BFD3 will come with new or updated effects. 
I'm guessing that something along the lines of Etch might be included but then I've just bought Etch for $20 so I'm happy.

Can't remember if you have BFD Eco but the routing is predetermined in Eco and much easier than session drummer 3 (honestly) as it not only assigns the channels for you it also names them accordingly Kick, snare, Overheads and so on.

Actually that's not true, it doesn't assign them automatically but each output in sonar is already named so it's a piece of cake as they say.

One thing that really bugged me on the few occasions I used session drummer 3 was that every time you loaded another kit you would have to re-assign your outputs again.
That doesn't happen in either Eco or BFD2.
