Hello,

Out of curiosity, would it behoove me to purchase a new UA-1G, or would you wager this to be a waste of money?

If you read my post I did caution that your UA G1 could have been shorted out. Its very important to remove them or any USB device carefully. Best to do it when your computer is not on. But I have done it so many times with my computer on I don't follow my own advice. Then I do it quickly and carefully. I doubt a little girl would be able to do it properly. Nor would I blame her. It was and is an accident.

Before you do though be sure that its not the USB port that has been shorted out. You can test this simply enough by installing another USB device to it.

I see nothing wrong in purchasing another one as long as you are sure this one is destroyed and you were happy with the one you had. For the money I think they are a good deal.

When you get it place a red flag around it stating do not remove at pain of death.

Good afternoon John,

As per your suggestion, I did check out the USB ports and they work fine with other USB devices.  Thanks for the suggestion.  So, perhaps I did short out my UA-1G.

If I did short out my UA-1G, how would that prevent me from downloading and installing the driver software even if the UA-1G isn't plugged in?

Thanks for your help!

I don't think it would prevent you from DLing the drivers. I do think there could be some remnant left that is preventing you from you being able to reinstall.

I would check out the system applet and look under devices to see if it is still listed. If os remove it from there. You also may need to go through the registry to find and remove any reference of it.

If you can't successfully install the driver you may not have a shorted device. Without the driver working there is no way to test it. Thus keep optimistic about this.

Hello John,

Thanks for your suggestion.  I looked for devices in the system applet and did not see it listed.  However, when I checked the registry, there was one item that had something with the UA-1G associated with it, so I deleted that.  Unfortunately, the problem still exists.

Actually, I would almost prefer to have to purchase a new UA-1G at this point!  However, would you suspect I would run into the same issue if I were to purchase a new UA-1G and tried to install the drivers via the CD-Rom that comes with the unit?

Thanks again!

Right, you and I are on the same page here. I think I wouldn't do anything until I get the driver issue sorted out.

I can only think somehow the driver is corrupted in a way that is preventing re-installation. I am beginning to believe that your UA-1G is OK. Its the driver that is the issue. The problem is we can't know until the driver starts working.

You wouldn't by chance have a backup of your system that you could use?

Also try downloading the driver from Roland and see if that works.

The only problem I see with buying a new one is that they're discontinued...

I found out when I went to buy one.  I have the MIDI version, which is still made, and wanted the audio version but no luck.

I can't see how disconnecting a USB device on a modern computer could lead to a problem with the device.  USB plug and play functionality is designed exactly for this.

I'm sorry that I can't offer any useful advise.  I've had many things stop working on me and it can take days to figure out why and get things back in order.  X2 screwed up my mouse so bad a few days ago that I had to operate windows without it until I got it working again.  These things are a pain.  Hope you get it working.

You're right it shouldn't happen but given the right circumstances it can. Remember though when a driver is required plug and play isn't how it works.

Splat
Uninstall.
Unplug
Restart PC.

Run scan disk on your hard drives.
Restart.

Download and install and run cc cleaner
Clean up your registry. Do this several times.

Run command prompt as admin
Type SFC /scannow
Wait. Restart if errors found.

Run windows update several times.
Update to latest chip drivers for motherboard
Download latest BIOS for motherboard and install.
Download latest 64 bit drivers
Download latest firmware if exists.
Install drivers.
Plugin Device
If working get straight onto updating firmware.

If not working you could try buying a cheap USB card. 50 percent chance it will work.

Another thing to try is a complete reinstall of windows.CLEAN install. Get a backup strategy going on. Windows 8 has better backup software than previous versions consider upgrading.

Hello John, Paul, and Alex, I tested my device on my work computer after I had downloaded the driver. It worked fine. So I'm guessing that the UA-1G is not the issue. And, Paul, that is a good point... it's awfully hard to purchase a product that isn't made anymore! John, I had downloaded the driver from Roland's site... no dice. So I'm guessing it is not a version issue. Alex, I actually took my PC into the computer repair shop. They completely cleaned it out. I'm not sure if they reinstalled Windows. I'll check with them. If I were to purchase a new audio interface, do you suppose the issue with my UA-1G driver would affect the installation of the new device's driver? Also, does anyone happen to have recommendations for audio interfaces? I just need something simple... I primarily record just guitar and will do little work with a mic. Thanks, everyone! Dan
