I saw/listened to another video of Rob (a newer one from this year) playing a Chapman 8 string.
 
I think the top 2 or 3 strings were bass and the rest were regular guitar strings........he played some funky slap jam with the thumb while playing the rhythm/lead with the other fingers......very good stuff indeed.
