Recently purchased the Sonar X1 Production suite and although I haven't acquired any hardware to record with yet I've been trying to experiment with manually programming midi. Is this something that requires certain hardware to be played back other than speakers? I've checked my outs and I've gotten the sound to work for the tutorial projects that the program comes with, just can't get anything with the midi. Still relatively new to this, any help is appreciated.

MIDI requires a playback device... either a hardware synth or a software synth. SONAR includes a whole collection of software synths that you can use.

Check out this video for some info on working with soft synths in SONAR... it focuses on the DreamStation, but the info can be applied to other synths as well...
