• SONAR
  • Glitching with CPU use above 50%

I have noticed that two softsynths, ACE and Skanner XT, cause my CPU to go over 50% usage and that I hear audio glitches when this happens.
Checked task manager and it doesn't agree with Sonar, but Reaktor's meter does, that's not the issue.
The issue is that I should be able to use all of what my Intel i7 2600k can handle without hearing artifacts.
BTW I am running Sonar 8.3 Producer but thought I should post here to get more of a response. Anyone have advice on this?

System Specs:
Windows 8 64-bit
Intel i7 2600k
12 GB RAM
Echo GINA 3G with latest ASIO drivers

Your i7 looks like it should be able to handle it, so I guess the first place to look is audio buffer settings etc.

Google "dpclat", and check your DPC latency. Suffice it to say there's a whole lot of hardware, firmware and O/S stuff going on between SONAR and the analog outputs of your interface, and it's not just CPU load that determines whether your audio interface's output buffer is being kept filled.

Your drivers aren't Win 8 are they? How recently did you upgrade to Windows 8?
I have been using my Terratec card (soon to be replaced) with Windows 8 even though they aren't even certified for Windows 7 - without difficulty. So I am not saying it is definitely a driver issue - but it sure is a possibility.

They are Windows 7 compatible, I believe they came out last summer.
Not saying the drivers aren't the cause, but everything else works fine it is just these two softsynths when they push the CPU load to 50% or more.
I did change the aud.ini file to use all eight effective cores and I don't think that has improved the issue.
I am at 64 samples right now, will increase to 128.

CPU usage seems to be very hit and miss for me. It's not consistent. In one project at the moment, I have 17 synths active and while the first core is working more than the rest, the load is relatively even. In another project, I have 6 synths going and the first core is spiking into the red like crazy while the other 5 cores are working miserably. And it's basically the same kind of synths in each...Z3TA, FM8, Kontakt, Rapture etc.

This happens to me too Sharke. I've got one project with the usual 3 soft synths I use, my standard comps etc and its all but useless unless I'm on highest buffer settings. On the other hand, I have much more complex projects that don't have anywhere near that effect on the meter within sonar.

Any users of ACE or Diva will tell you they are CPU hogs...
The thing is my meter isn't getting close to 100%
I suppose if I set ACE to "accurate" and doubled or quadrupled it I might get there.
Well there was just a Windows 8 update, I'll have to do more testing I guess.

Turn off intel speedstep if it is switched on (google for howto).

Cheers...
