Hi,

Here's a short(ish) orchestral piece I put together today. It was originally a solo piano piece I wrote a few weeks ago and I've been toying with making a full blown arrangement out of it... and so what with today being a public holiday in the UK I took some time (about 8 hours) to put it all together.

I'm not completely satisfied with the mix and I welcome any and all comments - good or bad!!!

Thanks for listening.

Cheers,
Terry.

Terry,

I think you achieved your goal of capturing the varying moods of the sea through this orchestral piece.   I like it a lot, really entertaining throughout.   I don't really have any advice or comment as it is really superbly done.   If I had to make something up:) I might suggest adding something like NI Action Strings to some of the more tense/stormy  points to add some more suspense or motion.    You have the right motion going but as I am sure you know, it is hard to get those live orchestral dynamics with MIDI unless you have those type of live samples/articulations to pull from.  Very minor observation.  I would still give this a  9.5 out of 10 score as is...The instrument choices and arrangement are top notch.

Always enjoy your music Terry. No exception here, great feel for the subject.
When all the instruments come to a complete stop and there is silence between phrases, I feel like there should be sounds still hanging in the air. Hard to achieve with generated instruments?

Thanks to everyone who has listened so far.

@Mark - Thanks for the glowing praise! I guess I do need to go back and try combining patches. I'm using EWQL Symphonic Orchestra Gold which should have everything needed... I just need to sort out the combinations to get the best 'action' result.

@Wayne - Thanks! Good point about the silence - I did add reverb to make the sound carry over into the silence but it appears to have disappeared in the mix (or the transcoding by the servers). I'll go back and see if I can improve it.

Thanks again,
Terry.

Terry,

This is lovely. Agree with Rebel re: reverb during silence. I, too, use EWQLSO and what I'll do is select 4 or 5 articulations for each section and place them on different midi tracks and channels. Then, while composing, I just use, mostly, a single track to get the ideas down, then drag notes between tracks to get the desired articulations. If there is a better, faster way, I haven't figured it out yet. Doesn't mean there isn't though...

Dan

I'm not gonna nitpick about this production.  Your composing skills are awesome, and this is one of your better ones.  Take a bow!

I liked everything about this peice, especially the intense parts but those sudden stops of no sound are quite not on the level of the rest of the peice...maybe some papers shuffling or a cough way out in the distance... GREAT JOB! -Shawn

Hi,

Thanks again to everyone for listening.

Dan - thanks for tip, I'll try that next time
Lynn - just imagine my bowing... ;-) Thanks for listening and making such a positive comment :-D
Shawn - Thanks for the positive comment. For the silence I think it's a reverb issue, next time I'm at my music PC (not for a few days unfortunately) I'll try and sort it out.

Thanks,
Terry.

Very nicely done and great easy edit points for cues in it for music supervisors.

I like this.

Nicely done, the orchestration sounds pretty good from here.   I like the point about half way through where it almost sounds like big bubbles coming up...    and the dynamics after that section worked well IMO.    Get some space around this sucker and it'd be good to go matey.
