Very occasionally, when I open a project and start playback, I hear no sound and nothing is being routed to the master bus even though the tracks are outputting audio according to their meters. Their outputs are all set to the master bus so no issues there. Problem is usually resolved by restarting Sonar. Was wondering if anyone else had experienced this. 

Has happened to me on occasion, several times.  Take a look at your Master Bus output next time it happens... when this has happened to me, my master bus output was set to "none".  All I needed to do was select my output (M-Audio Firewire) and it worked like a champ.

Strangely enough it was set to my interface as usual. 

Yea, there is some bus wierdness going on.  Sometimes stuff gets patched wrong.  Never happens w/ the patchbay except for user error.

Guitars will get set to master instead of guitar bus.  Stuff like that.  Really annoying, the several times it has happened.  But it does keep one of their sonic toes. ;-)

I have had audio tracks associated with output from soft synths do this to me several times as well, in both X1 and X2.  I never did figure out what was causing this to happen.

I had no content to preserve, as the audio tracks were just for routing soft synth output to the master bus, so for me all I did was insert a new audio track, set up the routing back to the soft synth, and lastly deleted the silent audio track.

So something appears to be amiss with audio tracks or their routing to a bus, but I have not thus far been able to come up with any recipe for this happening.

Definitely appears to be a bug of some kind, and since it only seems to happen once in a blue moon then I have no idea how to replicate it. Fortunately in my case it fixes itself after a restart.

Same thing here on my 64 bit Win 7. After a restart my 64 bit Sonar X1 will run for hours with no problem.  I can not discover what is going on!  Weird!

I think it is a bug as well.
With X1, some outputs are rerouted to something else. Not happening with 8.5.

This "occasional" problem has now completely screwed up a project I've been working on for days. 

In the course of deleting some unused synths, I ended up with some very weird track/synth routing that was not reflected by the information being shown in the synth rack. Multiple tracks routed to the same synth etc, while the synths they were supposed to be routed to were showing the correct tracks in the "Automation:" field in the synth rack. It took a lot of fixing. In no way shape or form did I alter the routing of these tracks myself, it all happened without me knowing during the deletion of 3 synths that weren't being used. 

To make matters worse, now nothing is being routed to the master bus. Same problem as outlined above. Tracks are showing activity on their meters during playback, but nothing is going to the master. Everything is routed correctly to the master, and the master's output is set to my interface as usual. Instrument tracks & audio tracks -- none of them are reaching the master. 

Only this time, restarting Sonar won't fix it. The project is at this point totally screwed. I don't know what to do. 

I get the feeling the synth rack is chock full of bugs. When I turn synths off and on, I frequently get the "audio engine has shut down unexpectedly" message. 

Bring on X2a. Please. I am so sick of spending half of my creative time dealing with this crap 

+1 on the crashes, both X1 and X2, as well as myriad problems with heavier 3rd party synths such as NI Massive or Rob Papen Punch, including audio engine drop-outs/error messages... Bring on X2a indeed... Slightly OT: is there any way to not get the annoying and useless 'error' message when I open up a project that have tracks assigned to silent outputs *on purpose* (for the sole use of sidechaining)?
