Is it possible to have Sonar X2 to STOP recording automatically after 24 minutes.

I have over 70 4 track tapes that to be dubbed as discrete tracks.

Each tape on High tape speed on my Tascam Portastudio 424 is roughly 24 minutes.

here's what i'd try:
- set up a loop region somewhat longer i.e. 24 min plus what it takes to change tapes
- set up punch in and out points for a 24 min stint
- make sure you have preferences/project/record/group clips across tracks
- start recording, keep it running and just change tapes
- i don't know the portastudio 424, but you might be able to use a MIDI signal from Sonar to trigger playback automatically

FYI, with clips group across track active, you can later move/mute/etc. the content from each tape (4 tracks) together ...

Maybe that helps

Thanks.
-Used an existing 24 minute clip as a template, and tried using it to PUNCH IN and OUT, but SONAR kept on rolling and wouldn't stop.
I would like to be able to
-hit PLAY on the 4 track tape,
    -hit RECORD on SONAR,
-have SONAR X2 RECORD and STOP after 24 minutes  (PUNCH IN & OUT / STOP at PROJECT END)

I am hoping that I can leave SONAR to record, come back an not have SONAR still playing 65 minuters later. etc.

-I posted this as it is similar to the current post

Sonar will not stop at end of project (and a long and winded story)

In addition to setting your punch points, you have to put Sonar into Loop mode

Actually, scrub that - I see you want it to stop after 24 minutes.

I don't think there's any way you can do that

recording will stop after PUNCH OUT time, so your recording will terminate after 24 minutes

playback will go on, but if there's nothing to playback and/or if speakers are muted, this really shouldn't matter because when you get home and push stop now time will jump to start and your recording will be there ...

actually what I'd do is what I wrote at post #2 and have my wife change tapes every 24 minutes. in this way my recording will be done by the time I get home and she won't find time to spend my money meanwhile on the home shopping channels

There is no getting around it. When you are transferring any analog recordings to digital you should do it at the original speed of the recording. Frequency response will be maintained much better. If your tapes were recorded at double speed that is a good thing at least you were getting the best sound possible at the time.

I know you may not want  to hear this but you should also be there while it is happening in real time. There are advantages to being there and monitoring the process. The main one being creating a database as you go and generate information about the recordings. That way you will be able to find things later. You also get to hear everything at least once.

I realise you have a large number of tapes but is there a hurry. Maybe just do a few a day and you will get through them eventually. Like 3 per hour is not a bad thing. You will only need 23 hours to do it all! Don't forget to clean the transport in between tapes otherwise you risk the heads getting clogged up at some point and if you are not around when it is happening you wont hear that either.

Hey Greg,

Cool avatar... Thanks for including my book in there!

No, SONAR won't stop automatically. But as FreeBlyBertl said, as long as you have the punch points set, recording will stop. SONAR will just continue playing after that, but if there's nothing to play, it doesn't really matter. You can just stop it when you come back. It won't affect the recording.

Sony Sound Forge does what you're asking, but it doesn't do multitrack recording, although it does do multi-channel.

Thanks for reading my book!
