Plugged into a peavey vmp2. Great sound!

Sometimes a Line 6 X3, sometimes a Radial DI box.

Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don't?

I plug a Rick or P-Bass into one of the high-impedence instrument inputs on my Mackie 400F firewire interface and then run it through Amplitube's SVT-Classic model with the matching 8X10 cabinet model.

I've owned a real Ampeg SVT with 8 10's for years, and to my ears, this method of recording sounds exactly like what I get from my SVT, without blowing the neighbors away with loud bass and without messing with mic placement & eq.

Another option which hasn't been mentioned yet is that you can plug the speaker output of the V4 directly into an Avalon U5 preamp. That will capture the sounds of the preamp and output tubes. I think the direct out will only capture the V4's preamp sound. The U5 is pretty expensive (around $500 or 600) but sounds excellent, IMO. It works well with acoustic guitar too so it's not just a one trick pony.

I plug into a Stewart di box. The XLR output goes to my OC and the direct out goes to my Podxt. I have a bass amp model that I've gotten as close as I could to an old Bassman 10 (from the early 70s). I mix that and the direct. If I need more, I clone the direct and add an amp model and shape the sound from there.

Lot of replies (ranging from the quite simple to impressively complex setups). I have an American P-Bass, which goes in to my Mackie Onyx board ("DI mode" engaged) direct to Sonar. From there, a little Sonitus compressor in the track buss, and we have good sounding bass tracks. Simple sometimes is best for classic sounds.

My latest favorite is to use the Eden WTDI - it's quite versatile with: compression, an enhancer and a nice eq.  I have also used  the Markbass Superbooster and the Bass Pod with good results .

The Portico II channel strip sounds great thru the DI input.  Twist knobs until you get what is right for the song.

On a lower end of the scale the Focusrite ISA One is very good.  Captures all of the sound.  A little of that transformer roundness, too, if it is switched in.

Sometimes I've used the interface's built-in DI.  My TC Konnekt sounds fine - better than the older Presonus FirePod I had.  Any of those should be able to get you most of the way there, but the advantages of a good outboard DI are the same as a good outboard preamp.

I use the very same chain for my P-Bass. I also sometimes plug into my UA 610 MK II with a bit of compression to even out each note.  Both chains give excellent results.
