Another option which hasn't been mentioned yet is that you can plug the speaker output of the V4 directly into an Avalon U5 preamp. That will capture the sounds of the preamp and output tubes. I think the direct out will only capture the V4's preamp sound. The U5 is pretty expensive (around $500 or 600) but sounds excellent, IMO. It works well with acoustic guitar too so it's not just a one trick pony.

How does this work? The amp wants to see a low impedance load around 4 ohms and will put out maybe 40vac. I don't see how you get there. Not nit picking, just curious how it doesn't melt everything.

I plug my bass straight into a DI box.

The DI direct out (XLR) goes to a Focusrite ISA One, the "direct" out goes to a Behringer Bass V-Amp. This presents a stereo output so I'll have that and the mono DI coming up in Sonar.

Mixing these 2(3) provides some great opportunities for layering

P-Bass (or Line 6) into LA-610 (preamp only, no compression) into one channel of my dbx 266xs for compression (1.5:1 to 2:1) then into my RME Interface. For my Alembic bass (which has separate outputs for for the bridge and neck pups); One side into True Systems P-Solo and the other side into Grace M-101 preamps; then both sides into separate dbx 266xs for compression and then each side sent to separate inputs into my RME interface (and record to separate tracks for more finite mixing control).

wow!  you are not messin around, your bass setup is awsome. i also have the old dbx 266, i never really learned how it worked, i would just twist nobs and get it to pump then pull back. have'nt used it in many years.

EBS ValveDrive as a preamp/EQ, followed by FMR Audio RNC1773 Compressor to the ”Instrument” input of RME Fireface 800. I might clone the bass track and run the second instance through Amplitube 3 plugin (before a group track with tape sim and compressor) if the final mix is sparse enough to need some extra oomph and room for the bass. I’m mostly using homemade five string basses these days, but the trusty old modified ’73 Rick 4001 isn’t just a wallflower either.

I use the John East pre in my Warmoth bass then into my BBE optostomp compressor pedal then into my Hartke HA3500 then DI line out into my Yamaha MG10/2 mixer and then line out to my RME HDSP9632. Once in the box I use ikMultimedia Ampeg SVX amp sim

Ampfixer: I don't know how it works technically, but I've tried it physically and it works fine. The U5 has a speaker input designed specifically for that purpost. Here is a diagram of how to hook it up. http://avalondesign.com/pdfs/u5speakerin.pdf Again, I don't know how it works technically.

I never knew about that feature on the Avalon. 400 watts max input... wow.



It may be helpful to clarify that this only works on a preamp with a very special and unorthodox input... it could literally melt most preamps you try it with.

It should also be emphasized that if you use the Avalon U5 speaker connection with older tube amplifiers or new ones that don't have load protection (for example; the guitar amps I make for myself have load protection but it's only adequate for about 10 minutes of neglect before it's expected to break down) must be loaded with a speaker or some sort of power soak to prevent burning the output transformer and melting the output tubes.

That's just reaffirmation that there is only one decent bass amp and it's an ampeg SVT.
