Hi all, my first official post but been lurking around this forum for many years and learnt so much from many very helpful people and a great community.
 
The track I am working on has about 10 audio tracks and three midi tracks, Superior Drummer and two instances of Kontact for bass and strings. The track was running fine and I was happily arranging, then I decided to put R-Mix on my vocal bus, again this worked fine and the track looped while I made my adjustments, saved and exited. I revisited the track yesterday only to find all my midi tracks would not play (audio tracks were fine) I was experiencing terrible latency when I tried to play any one of the three vsti and although the midi channel was showing activity, as you would expect, I was not hearing any sound.
 
After an hour or so of investigating it occured to me that the only addition since the track was playing fine was the R-Mix so I removed it from the vocal bus FX Bin and instantly everything came back to normal.
 
I haven`t as yet had time to try and reproduce the issue but I will over the next day or so and raise it - did strike me as strange that one plugin could have such an impact on midi channels only and nothing else but that is certainly what seemed to have happened.

Certainly seems strange. It'll be worth reporting it if you can reproduce it or it might just be one of those strange one time issues that happen for no apparent reason from time to time.

This happened to me once don't know why. I know that increasing the midi buffer size in prefs helped me, but then again I seem to think increasing the midi buffers solves anything...... What's that love? The car won't start? ... Try increasing the midi buffers..... 'Darling this curry doesn't taste right'....I think you should add some more midi buffers.

I don't fully understand this. How can you tell you're getting latency if you don't hear any sound? But I guess waiting "forever" to get a response would qualify as "terrible latency" 


In any case, the playback issue does seem like it might be solved by a MIDI buffer increase, but live MIDI input echo shouldn't be affected. So that symptom doesn't quite fit. 

Thanks for the responses and this whole issue is resolved by increasing the midi buffer. I`m kicking myself for not thinking of this simple fix, but you live and learn :)

Just to clarify in response to brundlefly, on looping the track nothing was sounding but if I played any of the three VSTI`s with my keyboard I was getting sound but massive latency.

The massive delay is caused by the pdc latency of the plugs. If you turn on the PDC bypass button on the control ribbon that sound take care of that one.

FWIW the next X2 update addresses this by adaptively managing the MIDI buffer size. If the delay in the project increases by adding plugins that require delay compensation, the MIDI buffer size is automatically recomputed to account for this.

Does that make the latency felt by the musician at the midi controller a moving target?

@Mike_Mccue I would not think this would change the perceived latency as long as the recompute happens when the plug or synth is added and not during playback. Plus the buffer is used for the existing midi data not the realtime midi input of your controller.
