• SONAR
  • Midi device naming - how to have control over it ?

Recently, due to a problem in my DAW PSU, I have to remove all cables to change it.

However, I did not reconnect back the USB cables correctly to it's original slot. All devices functioned fine, except the M-Audio Midisport 4x4.

The original name (as shown in Sonar preference) was MIDISPORT 4x4... become 2-MIDISPORT 4x4.

Every time I remove and plug in to a new USB slot (and a reboot), I can see Win 7 re-install the driver, and upon starting Sonar, the detected device become a new name :

2-MIDISPORT 4x4
3-MIDISPORT 4x4
4-MIDISPORT 4x4
..etc..

And the front number seems to increased following the order which I plug the USB cable into a port that was not plugged before and I did it at random order.

After many tries, I was able to find the original port "MIDISPORT 4x4" .. I thought I would clean it up by un-installing the driver and re-install it again (and that was due too, as there is an updated driver since my update about a year ago).

However, I still cannot get a clean "MIDISPORT 4x4" after a clean install, the front number still stays, as thought the un-install procedure did nothing to wipe them off.

Anyone have any ideas how to clear them out ? ..I'm hoping with a clean install, the USB port of my choosing would become the clean "MIDISPORT 4x4" ?

Tip : While installing the old, then new driver, I encountered runtime error, and the link below solved the problem (to set the program compatibility mode to Win XP, SP3) :

This should sort you out...............

Uninstall hidden devices

It's because most USB devices only identify themselves as a type rather than an individual unit so plugging the same unit into a different USB port installs it again.

Thanks FBB.

While removing the driver (following the instructions given), I did not see the other hidden M-audio devices, just one device.

And after re-installing the new driver, the number stays as they were before.

Running short of time..I just settle back to the original 'first' port. To really debug this one, I think I need to have a fresh Win installation and see if the numbers are actually assigned by first-plug-in basis.
