i totally agree.

my bug fixes have been "submitted to development" but we have no idea when it'll actually get fixed.

i guess synth automation isn't important to the rockers....

The thing is, I feel like this is a very basic/essential function that any serious DAW should be able to accomplish fairly easily. Yet it's been broken and a known problem for over 3 yrs. I would love to hear from one of the Cakewalk people on this one.
 
I know ba_midi does mainly electronic/dance music iirc. Would like to know if this issue has given him, or any others in that genre, trouble.

I'll respond by saying this (sorry fanbois, you're not gonna like it):


Sonar has many strengths, as do all big DAWs/Hosts, but year after year, the automation handling has been some of the weakest on the market in my humble opinion.


I have basically given up on communicating the issues to CW (as have others) or expecting any real advances in this area.  It just isn't (or hasn't been) one of CW's programming strengths.

Yeah - I know others will disagree (after all, what would a forum be without that! lol).  But I simply try to use automation as little as I have to or find alternate methods, or simply just expect to struggle through some of these long standing issues.

The other apps I use (Studio One, Ableton Live as examples) far excel in this area as compared to Sonar.

I honestly don't understand the lack of effort in this area (though I'm sure the CW folk will state otherwise).

That being said, I've seen some of these issues over and over, which is why I simply just find workarounds when I bump into these incredibly disturbing bugs.

I just got around to double-checking this in 8.5.3, and it worked perfectly there. So apparently it was fixed at some point, and has been broken anew in X1. My money is on it being some side-effect of the dastardly Edit Filter - my least-appreciated new feature.


I'm going to file a new bug report.

  yes, this is in fact the main reason for me considering getting another daw. I reported the bug and it has been submitted to development... but as it seems even the gui gets more attention than automation. sad, in a way.

The problem still exists in X1d (not using an simple instrument track, since they are broken in several ways).

Anyone found a workaround yet?

I can't even reassign the orphaned envelope, because the VSTi-Parameters (of KORE2) don't show up in the popup-menu (only standard parameters).

you said you were using a synth with multi audio outs if i read right.  when you insert a synth there is a dropdown at the bottom of the options box that says "display synth automation on".  you can only specify one track for the automation of the synth to be on.  makes it a pain working with multis that can be in aria and kontakt for example because each instrument will be going to a different audio output but the automation can only be on one.  long story short, when you copy and paste automation, you have to paste the automation to the track you specified when inserting the synth otherwise you'll get the orphaned issue.  if you want to copy/duplicate the automation from one parameter to another you need to select the automation and copy, then assign the existing automation to the parameter you want to copy it to, then paste the original automation back in.

TBH the automation handling in Sonar is dreadful. It's buggy and counter-intuitive. Sometimes I remove an entire lane but the automation is still applied to the track. I'm never really sure how to delete automation entirely. Drawing and editing it is a pain as well. Automation is one of the most essential features in a DAW but I've been sorely disappointed with Sonar's. Wish they'd fix it.
