May I commend two things to ALL users, if you have not done this for yourselves. 1: Kill off UAC, you do not need it, (unless you share your PC). 2: Grab AVG, most unintrusive reliable FREE Anti-virus out there. You won't know yourself if you suffer issues with either thing regularly. No more needing to run in admin mode, or affirm use, you are it. And of course, no need any longer to disable anti-virus to install anything.

I have dealt with ALL the anti-virus stuff since I ran my BBS back in early 90s. It was sad to see the demise of Norton to the crap it is today, somewhere F-prot got lost etc etc...

/end soap box :D

Tony

I had the exact opposite experience with AVG.  It slowed my whole system down.  No problems at all with Microsoft.

Yeah sorry AVG sucks. I've seen at least 3 systems where viruses managed to bypass it, and cleaning up afterwards was a nightmare (in the end had to uninstall and install a rival product). AVG feels nice until you run into problems. My view is you need to pay for a virus scanner but I understand the Microsoft scanner is fairly reasonable. I use ZoneAlarm which sucks in other areas but at least I know the product well enough to get around the product. McAfee used to be a world lead - sucks nowadays. Norton - not sure but a year ago I wouldn't have touched it. So maybe use BitDefender (always hear good things) and maybe ZoneAlarm (the most recent version), or if you are a cheapskate Microsoft.

I've never seen a perfect virus scanner however.

I build and repair computers for folks in my spare time, and have put Avast on literally over 50 machines.  I find that it does not interfere with Sonar, has a small footprint, allows dynamic disabling and re-enabling, and I believe was ranked like number 2 in testing.

It's also FREE - you just have to register once a year for it.

www.downloads.com and search for 'Avast free'.

I leave mine up and running all the time, and have no problems at all.

My Win 7 Audio PC only sees the internet when downloading windows updates or Cakewalk products. I have another PC for cruising the web. MSE is installed on both machines and while I know it's protecting my computer(s) I barely even know it's there. It's very light on resources. +1 for MSE.

I'd like to add another + 1 for MS Security Essentials.  I don't want to get into a long winded statement but I've used, Norton, McAffee, Fprot, Adaware, Spybot, Malwarebytes, AVG, and thats just what I can remember off the top of my head...  LOL

MS Security Essentials has been the best so far.  It protects your computer.  Take very little resources.  Doesn't interfere with the music software..

What more can you ask?

+1 for MS Security Essentials. (though I also employ Malwarebytes, and Hitman Pro for second opinion virus protection)
Free software, by the maker of your OS, why not ?

For those that have suggested turning off UAC , if you use your Audio PC to surf the Internet, having UAC turned on makes it WAY safer.

Hi All,

I am new to this and have been tearing out what little hair I have searching for an answer.  I have logged heaps of calls to Cakewalk who have been very friendly.  I changed everything including audio interfaces and reloaded Sonar I don't know how many times.

Earlier this week my McAfee license ran out I installed another antivirus (Nortons 360), touch wood but up until now Sonar X2 has worked fine (for the first time since I upgraded from X1).  Maybe there is something in McAfee that does not agree with Sonar X2.

Not big on McAfee, and besides the creator is on the run. http://abcnews.go.com/blo...s-latest-bizarre-tale/ Just one thing, a lot of people forget to remove their old virus scanner after it has expired, or think somehow that by running two scanners at the same time will make them even more secure - big mistake :). Cheers....
