Does any DAW support 2 different meters at the same time?

And wow Bob, that youtube vid rocks..progressively!

I have to agree with you fabulous album.  I do really like the 2nd part of the 1st part of Karn Evil 9 - Welcome back my friends, to the show that never ends = just a great tune.  And then there is Pirates - with some of the most brilliant music I have ever heard - and lyrics.

I was luck enough to see the 1977 tour of them twice - once with a 70-piece orchestra and once with just the 3 of them.

I have been working on playing the Fugue - I have the intro and slow parts down, have to work out the fugue - BIG effort coming up for that.

And I can play a bit of the Karn Evil 9 2nd impression, with that crazy fast piano.  That's really hard to play at speed, but I am working on it.

I'll send you a PM when I get some covers of some of those tunes worked up.  I also play some Jean Luc Ponty, some UK, Yes, Genesis, and some of the Allan Holdsworth stuff.

It's doable - but man, what a lotta work for what would be a obscure, little used feature. As long as as a system uses a master clock, you can convert individual tempos into that clock and out the port. Not a whole lot a bang for the investment buck, though. Then again, these days anyway, 'coolness' does have it's value....

Your comments about the Gentle giant song reminds me of reading about Zappa commenting on the time signature of Keep It Greasy from Joe's Garage - I mean it's all over the place!! He reckoned the beats all came together about once a month.

It certainly would not remain little used me.  I have all kinds of such compositions sitting around in my head.  I will end up getting recorded, I think I can, by using one predominant meter, and then the notes for all alternate-metered tracks would just line up hither wither in wrong measures, but I suppose they would all playback OK.

There is a thriving love of prog rock for folks in the 50+ age category, who lived and breathed this kind of music - and many still do.  There are all kinds of internet prog stations playing prog music 24x7.  I helped build the audio streaming radio station innards for one such station: www.houseofprog.com

Any time Jean Luc Ponty comes to the DC metro area, he stills out.

What I would give anything for at this point in my life would be to put together a band that could go out and not care about the gig money, but be able to rip out Karn Evil 9, Supper's Ready, Just the Same, Enigmatic Ocean, and Pirates.  If ANYONE in this forum is like minded, by ALL means lets PM our way through the logistics.

It KILLS me to be able to play ELP and Yes, but have to gig playing Mustang Sally - just can't find the musicians to do what I am looking to do.  I believe there is a thriving hungry population of prog-minded folks who would like to go see some band play Roundabout and And You and I live.

Here a Bruford solo - all him.  Not only does he have the triggered sounds, there are different timbres depending on the velocity, and on some of it, different SOUNDS based on velocity.

Here are two covers of the same tune, from UK, In the Dead of Night.

The first one is the real tune, with me playing along live with the tune.  I have my keys a little bit higher than the recording's originals, so that you can hear me in the mix better.  VERY cool tune -  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbHGkB4od6c

And here is the one I am currently working up - raw tracks, and there is no guitar tracks or vocals yet, and there is a glitch in the first chorus, but still a cool tune -

I am currently also recording an all-midi version of Bruford's Fainting in Coils here is the link to the original tune - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OpwmFeW5MPs

Sorry, joined this thread late.

My initial query, is are we talking about two tempos (50 bpm and 140 bpm stated in the OP) playing together, or two different meters (17/8 and 5/4) together?

Two tempos is harder.

I have often used two, or three time signatures together in Sonar. Having started out as a jazz and prog musician, I'm currently working on a project where I have to be be more "straight forward".  Tonight I have laid down a bass and drum part in 5/4 under the rest of the song in 4/4, as I got bored.

I choose the "Standard" meter, 4/4 in this case, then lay down the other tracks.  I sometimes split the "Odd" meter clips to reflect their pulse, where I can.  I laid down the drum part, then split the clips every four or so bars, then similar to the bass.  This just makes it easier for me when editing/reviewing the song later.

I've happily recorded 4/4, 7/8 and 17/8 together.  I've just had to choose my "base" time first, and worked around it.

Now, different/unrelated tempos at the same time, that's a whole new ball game..
