This isn't a bug, it's intended behavior (though not entirely obvious):

1. The PRV stops following now time as soon as you start editing in the PRV. The assumption here is that if you're listening to playback then want to edit a section of the song, you want the view to stop moving so you can edit that section. If you didn't edit any notes, it would follow the PRV as you expect until you do.

2. After editing, when you're ready for the now time to follow the PRV again, all you need to do is right+click the timeline in the PRV view. That takes the PRV out of the stationary edit mode, and goes back to following it.

Once you realize this is how it works, it actually makes sense and is helpful, but since there's no visual indication that this is happening, it just seems like a bug at first. IMO, it may be too clever by a half. Maybe Cakewalk will add some kind of visual indication to indicate that the PRV is in edit mode and scrolling is locked.

A toggle button or other indication would be great, since I don't usually need to edit one part while listening to the rest of the track...

I agree. I love Cakewalk and Sonar. But starting in X1, things got really unintuitive. Thankfully it is getting better. I hope they fix this in a patch or at worse, in X3.

I had remembered hearing about this in one of the X2 promo videos so I knew it was not a bug,  but it was painful not being able to figure out how to get the PRV to follow again.   I kept trying "Scroll Lock" on occassion thinking that might be the answer.  I've been exiting out of PRV then opening it up again.

It is actually a good feature and something I had wished for,  but not knowing how it worked was painful.

Anyway, let's see how long it takes for me to start using this feature the correct way after dealing with it incorrectly.  Bad habits are hard to break.

Yes Jim hard habits are hard to break. And a lot like you, I have wished for something this to be a feature,option for a long time. I didn't see it in the previews they had though. I would have been ecstatic about it. 
 
I like to edit my midi parts zoomed in close, to see how the note lines up with the grid. But I want to listen to the part I just edited in "context." IOW, I want to hear maybe two or three measures prior to the part I am editing and hear how it flows with the new edit.

But once I get it the way I want, I want to move on and do the same thing further along in the song. This will greatly help this work flow of mine. But remembering to do it! That's the thing.

And I disagree with "starting in X1, things got really unintuitive" My workflow has improved since I learned to use the Skylight interface. So bravo to the Sonar team for coming up with this. 

 

Ok so help me out here...

I right click on the timeline inside PRV?     When I do that I get a box that has a lot of time ruler options. but nothing that gets the PRV back to following the now marker.

Am I missing something?  What Am I doing wrong? 

Well Jim here's what I found:

When I first started X2, played the project, I was in PRV it scrolled like it always did.
Then I did some edits and it stayed with me where ever I was doing the editing. I tried several different spots.

But as you found, the method that Funkybot said to try to make the transport follow the cursor, won't work with me either.

I looked in the online help file and didn't find anything. I found it hard to locate anything in the online help file that pertains to this.

Anyway, I tried all sorts of keystroke combos and I got it to follow the cursor again. But now when I edit midi it keeps scrolling! I did something to turn it off. But now it won't turn back on!!

We are both missing something!!


[edit] I found that if you hold Shift+Scroll Lock it will toggle this behavior off and on. Now that I think about it, this has been a feature for a while. 

But I still can't get it to do it (scroll lock) automatically when I edit midi info. [/edit]

The Shift>Scroll Lock seems to be it.   But now...since I've been messing with it, I'm just like you.  I can't get it to happen after editing.   It use to happen after a couple of edits,  but it seems to not happen anymore.  

I'm just going to be happy with  "Shift>Scroll Lock"

There are two scroll locks, and they operate independently. Toggling the Scroll Lock key on your keyboard is one, and the other is clicking on a clip the track view with "Left click locks scroll" enabled under Options > Click Behavior. The first is unlocked by hitting Scroll Lock again, and the second is unlocked by clicking in an empty area of the track view.

Here's the catch: Whichever method you use to stop scrolling, you have to  use the same method to restart it. And if they're both enabled, they have to both be disabled to restart scrolling.
