Hey Charles,

LOL! No problem, man. Of course, you know you are now obligated to buy my next book when it comes out.  Just kidding!

Thanks!

Hi guys, so yeah just to clarify - just griping about a small detail in my Favorite DAW!  No negativity intended, but I do need to affirm that I'm just being factual.

The fact that lanes play together, by default, seems like a fundamentally wrong approach.  It's ONE track, and the takes are your "building blocks"...the lanes are to facilitate organization.

The tool you guys describe definitely adds some functionality (and thanks for pointing it out - I'll flag this as solved...) but it still lacks basic things like crossfading.  I suppose this could be accounted for by splitting the clips and physically dragging the pieces to a new track to create the comp, then using all the manipulation tools, but this defeats the purpose of lanes... you could simply use folders then.

The Sonar approach could be vastly improved if the Isolate tool was changed to an "active clip selector tool".  It's seriously so lightning-fast in Reaper and Cubase to just split, click, split, click, ... then go back and adjust the split points.

Thanks for the responses!

Regarding lane playback... just click the Solo button of the lane you want to play. All other lanes will be muted automatically.

Also, the split, click method mentioned is possible in SONAR. With the Smart tool, just hold Alt and click to split the clip. Data to the left of split is automatically selected. Assuming that's the part you want to keep, just press Ctrl + 1 to isolate that audio and mute the same audio in all other lanes.

Bit more user error here you'll be pleased to know. Select the clips you want to fade comp together and then choose "Fade clips..." from the TV-->Clips menu. That will  allow you to set up crossfades and fill gaps (as long as the clip hasn't been trimmed).

You'll be pleasantly surprised to learn there's not much Sonar can't do and plenty of knowledgeable folks here to tell you how if you can't find it in the manual or other learning resources such as Scott's book or some of the tuition videos available such as that linked in my sig. (How's that for a shameless plug?)

Hey Scott, I am sorry, I totally blew it! Ha ha ha. I had just watched the Console Emulator video from Craig so his name was in my mind. But yes of course, The most excellent SONAR Power books are definately by you... Man, I feel lame now. Makes me look like I am not an experienced fan boy. I will regain my status soon... Ha ha.
I corrected my "typo".
People often get us confused. I suspect it's because we get dumped into the same "people who talk about Sonar a lot" folder
