Okay, bear with me. I don't know why I don't know how to do this, and haven't for years.

But it's getting annoying not to know!

Say I have a drum track. And in this, I have some clips already, but they are lacking enough kicks.

But suppose I want to add some kick drums, and I want to use the step sequencer, in a separate clip that is in a take lane.

So the kick clip constructed with the step sequencer can be run cleanly in parallel with the rest of the drum hits that are in another take lane.

My intuition would be to right click/insert new clip, and then display this new clip as a step sequencer clip in the dock.

But this does not seem to work (or I am missing the way to do it). It seems very difficult to create new clips, and the only way I know of, or have seen others do, is to duplicate an existing clip and then unlink it from its source clip, then edit it. OR, to record (assuming you have midi input).

Clearly, I'm missing something (???)

Unfortunately, take lanes are still a bit "squirrely" and need to be "ironed out," so to speak. How to start a new clip with the step sequencer, just position the Now Time where you want the clip to start and then open the SS (press Alt+4) and start inputting notes. SONAR will automatically create the clip.

If you do it with lanes, SONAR will probably place the clip in the first lane even if you select a different lane, so when you're done, you'll need to drag the clip to the new lane. That's one of the current lane quirks.
