  • Roland Electric Kit, triggering Superior drummer in X2

Ok, so Ive searched a little for this and couldnt find the exact mechanisms of it within sonar

Can anyone point me a link where I can do this effectively or from experience could someone give some details/advice.

I have to arrive somewhere and get this recorded so I dont really have time to fool around beforehand with equipment and options.

The kit is a roland (not sure which model but certainly not the higher end ones) and I'm looking to record a drummer along with a vocalsit/guitarist. So I need to record the kit via MIDI and then use SD2 samples. Am I correct in saying that I will need to create a drum map??

Thanks,

Cian

Hi,Whack. I'm a SD2 user myself. Yes, you will have to map your roland pads to trigger a certain note in SD2. This could be time consuming but the notes in SD2 have to match whatever midi note vakue you are sending it. I have noticed some GM midi notes match right out of the box. You could find out the model number of your kit and do a search on the net for a drum map for your particular kit. You may get lucky. Otherwise, take a look at SD2 Mapping screen and write down which drum or cymbal is on what key. Then go into the edit menu on your Roland kit and match the output notes to those keys. Pretty simple, but takes a little time.

Another tip is sometimes the keys are transposed down 1 octave. Example= C2 is your kick on a midi keyboard or possibly a different kit. C2 could be C1 or C3. I find it easier just to use the Mapper in SD2 and make a simple list.

Thanks sidroe, I understand that the drum your hitting on your kit must match the correct sound in SD2. Did you have to install software for the kit on your computer or can you just plug midi, its recognised and then select within sonar? Where does the Roland menu come up for you?

I don't use SD2, but the mapping video on their website says that SD2 has presets for many common electronic drum kits. Even if the kit you will be using is not listed in the presets, there is a lot of commonality among Roland kits, so just try the various Roland presets in the SD2 mapping screen. One of those should at least be a very good starting point, meaning 75% or more correct right off the bat. I have had similar luck with a Roland HD3 kit (the smallest one) using a TD12/20 preset in Native Instruments' Studio Drummer.

thanks ptheisen, can you post a link from the website, cant find it here at moment, is it the forums you got it from?

I presume once it is configured within SD2, a simple softsynth instrument track within sonar will suffice?

Also, see this post. It may help.

I'm afraid I don't know how to actually do a link, but I just went here: http://www.toontrack.com/products.asp?item=30 where there is a list of videos, and clicked on the one labeled MAPPING. It mentions the presets at the end. It doesn't go into detail, I'm just assuming that SD2 must do what most of the other drum VSTs do. Maybe Sidroe can elaborate. An instrument track should work fine, the Roland will probably default to output on midi channel 10, so make sure that SD2 is coordinated that way.

Well, what do you know, I did a link! It must just happen automatically when you cut and paste the URL from the browser, 'cause I didn't do anything special. I never knew that. So at the moment, I like computers. :) But there are times...

Hey whack - I saw that you may have a need for a drum map.  I don't know if it will necessarily get you what you want, but I have a tutorial about how to create drum maps in Sonar on my site.  I use a VDrums kit (TD-20 - the higher end), but the concept is the same for all.

Check it out if you have a few minutes to watch/listen: http://www.blades85.com/ and look on the Music/Sonar page under specific topics.

Let me know if this helps, please.
