Our eldest son bought us a record player for Christmas (it finally arrived on Monday).

Quite fascinating, getting out all those records that I haven't listened to in years... Not had a record player for getting on well over ten years.

This morning I decided to remind myself what Ricochet sounded like, besides scratched to hell:-

That thing looks high tech.  I have an old JVC direct drive that's easily 35 years old and still working well.
I have to give some of the old albums a spin every now and then.

I bought a really nice stereo system in 1987 which REALLY demonstrated how bad vinyl records sounded compared to CD's.  The very next week I sold my collection of over 2,000 records and began acquiring CD's like nobody's business!  I must admit that I don't miss any part of them:  The handling, flattening, melting, cleaning, clicks, pops, covers, sleeves, SHORT play (per side), etc.  Even when I had a turntable capable of stacking up to five albums, it still seemed to go through them too quick and, obviously, you didn't hear each album in its entirety before going to the next but rather half of each before flipping the stack and hearing the other half.  Back then I used to record the entire album onto a cassette tape and play that instead.  I really like being able to shuffle play thousands of songs now and not have to monitor the process!

I had Ricochet on vinyl many, many years ago. First time I played it I had it on 45rpm and didn't notice until side one ended rather quickly..

Unfortunately, there was a serious injury that befell one of our reindeers and the usual delivery date had to be postponed.
Please accept our sincerest apologies.

My kids don't ever buy me cool stuff like that. I do get hand-made Christmas and birthday cards from some of the grandkids, though. But just once it would be nice if they got me, oh, a high-end ribbon or something. Maybe they're saving up for it.

Just take those old records off the shelf
I sit and listen to 'em by myself
Today's music ain't got the same soul
I like that Old Time Rock 'n Roll

I'm not sure that it is, to be honest. A bit quirky, yeah, and for something with built in speakers it doesn't sound too bad.
