If you look at any of my orchestral projects, I've got keyswitches everywhere along the timeline, not for switching articulations but just to make sure that wherever I am in the project, hitting play will always trigger the correct articulations - the same would apply to Exports.
One of my techniques for a articulated midi track is to put the key-switches for a particular instrument into a separate track. To some, it might seem a hassle, but it sure makes finding/editing them easy. Of course, you need to map a key-switch track to the same midi channel as the instrument it is switching articulations for. I usually name these tracks KS-'instrument'. When done, I put them out of the way in a track folder.
