I am running Sonar X1 Producer Expanded, which is located on my C (SSD) drive. However, due to lack of space on the SSD drive, I would like to install my newly purchased Sonar X2 onto my hard disk (D drive). Can this be done? If so, how? On my first attempt to install X2, I discovered that the install was directed to the SSD drive. I interrupted the install as I found no way to redirect it to the hard disk.

You could try this,
Intall to th c drive, but where you get an option to install certain items somewhere else, then choose the d drive for those things.
For example load all content and wave files etc to d drive, as they take up the most space.

That way the brains of x2 will be on the os drive, but all the referenced materials and files will be on the d drive.
I beleive this is actually preferable as it should work more efficiently.

Also, 'a must do' is to change the location of the audio folder to another drive from C.
Thi speeds up peformance, as windows and programs access C drive and Audio is written to a seperate drive while recording.

On my machine, although i specified my E drive as the audio drive in preferences (press P) i still have to change the audio folder drive letter to E when saving a project.

Wen saving a project i make a new folder with the song name to save to, and underneath that box where it asks where to store audio file i simply change the drive letter to E, and then make sure the same song name folder is added to the end of the string.

Eg
G\x2projects\bluesuedeshoes
E\x2projects\audio\bluesuedeshoes

Hope this helps and sorry if you already knew this stuff

My Setup is:
Sonar is running from SSD (System and DAW's)
Projects and Libraries are on the secnd SSD (in your case HDD)
Dimension Pro's library is'nt so big, according to other libraries.
  If it's possible in any way try to delete some other programs or data from your SSD. 
You wont miss the speed of an SSD for your DAW.

Thanks for the encouragment, but it shall take some time. Everything does at this age!  

Why not upgrade X1 to X2? X1 can allways be reinstalled?

This is by the way why I hold out buying a SSD. I need atleast 256GB on C. And that's not even large for my needs.

An SSD is great for playing back samples tho. It is that fast. So maybe you can swap around some disks and use another HDD as C:\

You have something set up incorrectly as my saves (project and the associated audio) are saved on the E drive with no additional input from myself.
Double check the Folder Locations page of the Preferences as this should control the save location and it does seem to work.

There are separate settings for "projects" and "audio"
Preference>File>Folder Locations>Projects
and
Preference>File>Audio Data>Global Audio Folder
Set both to the same path

Then pressing save works ok, but when pressing save as i have to respecify E drive again.
