My first computer was a ZX81, with 1k of memory.  He built me a 4k expansion pack for my birthday.  Sinclair released a 16k expansion pack, but that was insane - what could you possibly need 16k for?
I recently got a zxpand + ay interface for my zx81.. so it now has SD card / 64k ram / joystick and sound.

My brother wrote the floppy disk format software for the BBC model B..  Was it 5.25", I can't remember?

It used to play Beethoven's Fifth if it worked, and the funeral march if it didn't..

it supported both 3.5 and 5.25.. it now supports IDE / USB / and
SD http://acorn.chriswhy.co....d/ctorwy31_MMCKIT.html

such programs just flicked between track/sector to make a note, knocked the drive heads out of alignment, there was one for 1541 on c64, that would play daisy-daisy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5gnMgmlKi_o

the bbc micro's "trick" these days is for the caps to fry in the psu after 10+ years of none use.. so need replacing straight away before turning them on

In the eighties we (my siblings and I) tried to convince my father to get a computer at work, but he kept refusing because "They are SO Noisy".

When he worked at Etam the computers filled several large rooms, and had big punchcard and ticker tape machines that sounded like a factory.

I still have Computer Studies text books from school (very ahead of our time) with pictures of hard drives the size of washing machines.

I'm off to bed now in a fit of nostalgia to dream of cassette back ups, one alien space invaders, BASIC and the life size picture of Debbie Harry my brother printed on his teletext printer with only "X"s..

64k is just silly.  What are you trying to do, take over the universe?

I know for a fact you dont even need that much power to overcome an alien invasion, as they only attack one at a time, and they do it very sssloooooooowly..

Maybe it's the stress and exhaustion but I'm giggling that jb's post count is now "486" because of this thread.

Oh goodness me... I have become a dork.

Took me a minute to see the joke, but Ha Ha Ha.

486?  That's a bit modern..  Maybe I'll move up to Pentium soon..

The first computer I owned was a 486. It was craptastic. I just found the old hardrives I yanked out of it. Not sure how I can access the data on them. It's mostly just lyrics and crappy MS paint art but I still want it.

If you know what core memory is than you've been around awhile.

P.S. No fair looking it up.

Hi Miguelito
You'll have to be careful referring to 5 1/4" floppies - most of the younger generation who use this forum won't realise you are talking about Computer Discs!!!!

I only know as my grandfather told me..........................
Nigel

Then you'll never guess what's on my 10 1/2" reels!
