When a "new" plugin is installed, we all know that the parts and pieces (.dll, help files, bitmaps, license, content and resource files, etc.) are often scattered across multiple folders based on the whim of the developer.

Do you think it is worthwhile (or crazy waste of time) to scavenge ALL the parts and pieces for each plugin and relocate them into single folder. Yes, part of the relocating is fixing Registry file paths.

For example, imagine a folder named
    F:\Plugins x64\Dimension Pro
    F:\Plugins x64\BREVERB
    F:\Plugins x64\Lounge Lizard
    F:\Plugins x64\etc.

Thank you for your comments.

STUFF: MSI GT70, SONAR X2, Jazz and Big Band 3, Izotope RX2, Izotope Nectar, Melodyne, MusicLab RealStrat, MusicLab RealGuitar, MIDI Express XT, Novation Impulse 61 key, Scarlett 8i6

Native Instruments Komplete is a great expansion to SONAR, guitar rig pro, massive, fm8, battery and more...all great.

If you're totally confident about editing the registry then yeah, do it, but make sure you export the Registry as it is before you start.

As you go though the installation process of the bigger synths (VST's)  pay attention to where it is placing things if you let it install to a default path.

Some will install in their own folders and some will ask you if you want to custom install. The ones that give you the option of a custom install are usually the big ones with large sample libraries. It is OK to allow the main VST DLL to install in the VST folder in cake's folder.... this is my preferred location.... and it will often set up it's own sub folder in the VST folder..... but if there are large sample libraries like you will find in the Kontakt products.... I install them to a different "storage" drive on the machine. They run fine form there and don't fill up the main drive so quickly.

Many installs will go fine and Sonar will auto recognize them in the proper synth list. If they don't show up, restart the DAW. If they still do not show up they may need to be added manually using the Plug in Manager. Simply add them to the list in the plug in manager.... this is where you may need to know the path to the DLL file where it was installed......

Once that is done, it should be visible and it should load and run properly.

I have found that some of the free VST's and plugs are not always compatible and functional...... in that case....I delete them.
