  • Easiest Way to Comp Layers???

Hi Everyone,

I’m still pretty new to Sonar and just trying to get my feet wet with LE before moving up to X2 Pro.

So, I’ve been trying to comp some drum track layers. I have 3 layers. I setup my loop points and solo the layers. I also have my snap points set correctly, and I believe everything is setup correctly in the Record section under Preferences.

But the problem is when I loop, mute the unwanted layers for a section, and then highlight the portion I do want the audio in the unwanted layers aren't visually “muted” like I’ve seen in the online tutorials for this function. Then again, the online tutorials I’ve seen for this function are done in X1 Essential and above; so, I’m not sure if LE even allows for comping to be done like this, since I’m following the steps demonstrated but not getting the same results.

The bottom line is, I haven’t figured out how to comp multiple layers into one perfect take. Even when I try to drag or cut and paste the audio doesn’t line up correctly.  Any suggestions, thoughts, or assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Best regards,

Chris

What LE version are you using?

If you're moving up to X2, don't struggle with the layers, because, AFAIK,  X1 and X2 have a different "Track lane" system from the pre Xx versions, which is nothing like in older versions. But maybe I've somehow misunderstood things, if you say you've seen layers used in X1 Essential tutorial. So, is it layers or lanes you're talking about?
My way of comping layers is: I simply drag the good takes to one, new track.

I should have specified, I’m in X1 LE, which is what came with my Roland Quad Capture that I recently purchased.

Here's a link to the video I've been viewing, among others: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=teGGxrYGvO8
One thing he does in the setup is to “include snap to screen set,” but I can’t tell exactly how he’s doing that, and I didn’t see “snap to” options anywhere in Preferences; so, I’m at a bit of a loss there. Then he uses Aim Assist but doesn’t really explain what that does. I tried using it as he does but I really couldn’t figure out what it was doing at that stage. Next, as you’ll see he has the track setup so that once he highlights the area in on layer he wants the rest are muted, but I can’t figure that part out either.

So, I’m not sure if I’m doing something wrong in my setup or if X1 LE is just not capable of this. Like I said, I’ve tried cutting and pasting, moving, and dragging layers to a newly inserted layer; yet, the problem with that is the sections never line up perfectly.

Thanks again for chiming in and for your help.

Chris
