  • Separate MIDI tracks?

I'm wanting to use the TTS1
EG I want a horn on track 1 and, say, a piano on track 2
What is the simplest way to do this?

I assumed you would do the first track thru the browser(did that no problem) and subsequent tracks thru right clicking, making a MIDI track (did that and recorded a second track) and then change its parameters to read channel 2 in the TTS1. (can't do this part)
IOW I can't make the second track change instruments to channel 2 of TTS1.

Maybe I'm all confused about the TTS1 having 16 tracks and so thinking one instance should feed 16 midi tracks? Otherwise why have 16 trax?

Is it better to have several TTS1's in the Browser, one for each track?

I guess I'm confused about the "Instrument track" it makes automatically (track 1) compared with a MIDI track (track 2) one makes by right clicking in the Track View.
And how to change track 2 to channel 2 in the TTS1

IDK... It would probably be less confusing to just give each sound it's own track and instance of TTS. Easier to mix too. However I'm just scratching the surface of MIDI stuff.

What you're asking can be done, but it's definitely easier to just use a separate instance for each sound. Check out this video... it focuses on the DreamStation, but the info that it provides can be used with other synths...

TTS-1 is polyphonic type synth that will output to 4 outs. Those outs can be routed to different audio tracks.  An instrument track should not be used in any case but for a synth like TTS-1 its a very poor choice.

Place your MIDI on as many MIDI tracks as you need then just output them to the inputs of the TTS-1. Make sure that eaqch MIDI track also has its own channel, this is important. Because that will determined what channel is used on the TTS-1.  Remember, MIDI can use up to 16 channels. These are not the same as tracks, but a MIDI track can have a channel too.

When you talk about patches on the TTS-1 you need to think in terms of channels too. Thats how you get a piano on patch 1 and bass on another channel, say channel 2.  Drums are placed on channel 10.

Remember the TTS-1 is a General MIDI synth and complies with the GM specs.

This is a bit confusing to me because the standard browser install uses an instrument track automatically.
Would you add audio tracks and use the FX area to link to separate instances of TTS1?
Does the MIDI keyboard work with this?

When you say "standard browser install" just what do you mean? I use the synth rack.

When I setup a synth I use the browser but I use the synth tab on it and it will have a plus sign. Click on that and a list of synths will appear. Click on one and it will be placed into the synth rack. A dialog box should appear where you can set up just what you want. It will have all the options for inserting a synth into a project. This is known as the properties page for that synth.

I think I could use a point by point for recording a couple of tracks.
EG the simple "multiple instance" version would be
1.Browser -Insert synth 1
2.Change the first instrument to desired.(Left click on the name in the TTS)
3.Play and record with keyboard.
4.Browser insert synth #2
5.Change the first instrument to what ever desired
6. record new instrument?

This works, is quick and intuitive, thanks.

If someone had the time,  I'd be interested in a similar point by point for using one instance of TTS1 and figuring out how to do the channel and other setting changes on separate tracks (MIDI? Instrument?Audio?)for the TTS1 .

And yes, what you described is what I mean by a Standard Browser install

Believe it or not its simple when you know how.

On every MIDI track (be sure to have the track inspector visible) you will see a widget for channel. This is used when you have a synth like TTS-1. and you want to use more than one patch on it.

Make sure that that tracks out goes to the TTS-1 and the channel is set to, for now 1.

Insert a new MIDI track and do the same with the channel except set it to 2. The out should be TTS-1.

Either record MIDI to those tracks or use loops. For now I would just drag a loop for lead to the MIDI track that is channel 1 and a bass loop to the track that is channel 2.

On the TTS-1 on the first channel select piano on the second channel select a bass.  Play the loops.  You should hear piano and bass coming out.
