I recognised his voice from his free videos on Youtube. They are terrible. He doesn't seem to know what he's talking about. He thought that the best thing about the PC2A was how it looked. I'm so glad I did recognise him, or I might hace bought it.

I am horrified that Cake would sell a video by him. Surely they watched his other ones. MCIHomeStudio, i think they're called.

It does not reflect well on cake.
Thats very unfair comment. Karl over the years has given us loads of free videos. What have you ever done for this forum only moan. If you know so much then do us a video and show us.
The videos are great and I am always learning new things in sonar or easier ways to do things. The video is very reasonable priced and well worth it money.

Woa... woa... rewind... uncross the crossed wires.....

I think JB101 is referring to the author of SWA Mix Clinic which isn't me.

Just wanted to clear that little misunderstanding up.

ummm Fast biker boy. I just downloaded your video a few days ago from the cake store, and I got to say that I think it is well done and it goes into great detail. I always watch these things with a pad and a pen so I can take notes to try something later. Karl I think your X2 video is great. I have not watched your other work as of yet. just my 2 cents

+1

Thanks for the support Marcus and JB101. Glad you like it.

I just downloaded the SWA Complete Sonar X2 video but haven't watched it yet. However, I have a complaint right off the bat. One 9 hour long video? I was expecting at least maybe 10 or so separate videos divided into topics! Makes it a little hard to navigate, or to refer back to stuff later.

I notice that if I view the video in VLC player I can access a chapter list. But where can I do this in Windows Media Player? I've been looking everywhere but can't find how to bring it up. Can't help but wonder how frustrated I'd be if I only had WMP installed on my system.

Posted this in my own thread just shortly before you guys started this one:

I recently bought and downloaded the "SWA Mix Clinic" videos from the Cakewalk Store and loved them.

I know how to get around a DAW, but nowhere near as well as I wanted.  These videos (7 of them) really helped.  And I think I'll continue to refer to them.  They weren't just a one-time thing for me.

Each video covered a different part of developing a song in Sonar X2 all the way up to mastering.  The narrator didn't need to cover every single detail of each plugin he used because you got to watch him use them over and over.  The repetition and the context gave me the confidence to dive in where I would have been a little scared to do so previously.

If you already know your way around X2 but want a little more info about side-chaining, mixing and some of the cool plugins I would recommend this.

My name is Duke Starbuckle, and I approved this message.  :)

it's a none issue though, not like quicktime player or VLC cost you anything? ;-)

with regard to the mix video.. the one regarding it on groove3 , should have given the guy who did the SWA one an insight to it. I'm signed up with groove3 on a year pass.. and like their stuff, esp. Eli's stuff.

as for the SWA stuff, I bought Karls video.. only downside is.. if he ever turns up and says he's only gonna stay 1 hour.... does that turn into 9 ?

Wow, I didn't think others would be so disappointed in these videos.  Personally, I considered them a jumping-off point for me, not a complete tutorial on settings and numbers.  I actually prefer to mess with settings myself and use my ear to determine what's right.

These videos pimped me into wanting to check out more of the features that I was nervous about messing with before.  Hope I didn't lead anyone in the wrong direction.

If possible, I'd like to be part of the solution instead of part of the problem, so How About This:  What if Cakewalk gave us a preview of every new video they promoted?  And if the video download is broken down into more than one part the there should be more than one preview.  That sounds reasonable, right?

I have watched the Mix Clinic, and I'm very happy with it. I like the way he demonstrates different tools. For example, he uses several compressors which gave me some insight on using the Pro Channel and non-PC FX. Same with a couple different reverbs.

He doesn't spend a lot of time explaining why he uses certain settings in the effects. That's fine with me. He shows where the settings are, and what he likes on each track, and then I can mess with it to suit myself. I wouldn't want to get bogged down in why he chose every setting, just give me the idea and I'll try my own judgement later.

I've always used Sonar mostly for MIDI. So, for me, he covered a lot of ground and introduced (to me) many of the tools found in X2. I found this very helpful, and about the right pace and level for me.

I think it's a great buy, on sale for $20, and would recommend it to anybody who wants a good start on using the features of X2 Producer Expanded.

For those that found this video good and insightful, well that's great. I've no problem with that at all. In fact I hope there are lots more people that find it helpful..... I really do.

For me I found myself saying why? Far to much, in fact by the very end I was almost shouting at my screen, "Well yeah! ..... BUT WHY"

Now, I listen to record, play and mix rock music, that's my thing and for this reason, a while ago I bought Groove 3's Mixing rock. It's pro tools based but generic.... I knew this when I bought it. Now the guy that did that video did the same thing as this chap in the Sonar mix video, but, crucially for me explained every one of his choices and encouraged the listener to experiment. In fact he often showed alternatives.

Being bombarded with numbers is great if you understand why in the first place.  I would like to know in a mixing TUTORIAL why the chices are made.

I would encourage anybody who hasn't seen the mixing rock video to watch it, and then compare!

Sorry I still think this is poor showing.

I am sincerely glad for those who did enjoy.

I've not watched his (Pipin Henderson or MCI Home Studio)) mix video, but I have watched his YouTube Videos.

One example pointed out to me by another forum member was a video of his on mixing where he was showing how to level out a dynamic vocal track. He added gain from  Sonitus EQ  and slammed it into a Boost 11 limiter to level out the vocal line. I think most people would agree that that was a suspect way to do it.  Boosting gain using an EQ?  And as for Boost11..

I think most people would consider using a compressor for this task.  I use the PC76 followed by the PC"a, personally.  This is just one small example of his "individual style"...

Anyone who knows anything about mixing will recognise his lack of knowledge, but beginners will not know any better.  They will believe it...

Im sorry you feel that way, when you do a tutorial on a subject such as mixing you are going to get some people disagreeing with your method or your way of explaining it. My Boost 11 use is something really not that uncommon, im surprised it has had the reaction it has, I find the one issue that divides many of us when it comes to mixing, is some rule we all must follow to achieve a good mix. I hope the Mix Clinic does at least give people the opportunity to explore different ideas and not conform to what everyone thinks is right, otherwise new sounds and techniques would not be discovered. If the Boost 11 use is so strange to most people I personally would consider this a good thing and encourage people to experiment. Thanks for your input.
