  • Can't run Sonar & S. Explained at same time SOLVED

As I go through this tutorial, I would like to have Sonar and Sonar Explained side by side so I can go back and forth, trying the various components as they are demonstrated. When both are running at the same time, I get a very loud static noise. I also have the same problem if I try to have Sibelius and Sonar open at the same time. (I start my Sonar midi tracs in Sib. because I like to work first with notes, and that's where my charts will ultimately be printed). Is this kind of thing most have problems with, and is "normal", or is there something I can change to solve this problem? Thanks.

We can start speculating when you've given your system specs. I have no idea of what SONAR Explained is like, but running Sibelius and SONAR simultaneously surely requires a reasonably good rig and soundcard drivers. Crackling usually indicates it's related to soundcard and it's drivers.

Ideally you'll have a dedicated audio interface for SONAR, and let multimedia stuff like SONAR Explained use your onboard sound. A lot of folks seem to think you need to disable onboard sound, but I like to leave it active for precisely this scenario, and make it the Default Device for Windows audio so it keeps its mitts off my audio interface.

If you really want two audio apps to use your dedicated audio interface at the same time, at the very least you'll need to make sure they're set to the same sample rate, and check the box in SONAR's audio preferences to "Share drivers with other programs".

I get that info by clicking on my name (under Author)...isn't that the way? I also see it in the box below the messages, but I guess I don't know how to put it there - but would be happy to. I thought it was included with the "Signature"? I always try to check that, too. X2, 64, Quad core. 8 gig mem., Lexicon Omega

Thanks, Brundlefly. That helped...a little. When I check Share Drivers... I get rid of the static when Explained is open, but still get static when I activate the Sonar half of the Window. I don't know how to "have a dedicated audio interface". Does that mean I'd have another "audio interface" - beyond what I have now - another amp or whatever?

Knowing your soundcard name/type would be an important part of the system specs mentioned. Just write them all in your signature in your profile.( IIRC you need to check if signature is shown every time). That's practical. In this context the audio interface means some proper one, not the integrated sound chip of your PC. You say: "beyond what I have now", why not tell us what it is, so we don't need to ask for a third time?

As Brundlefly writes, the integrated one is ok for other sounds than the actual DAW work.

Go to the top of the thread and look at the tabs there.  Hover your mouse on User Control Panel. then click on Edit Profile.  Once there, click on the Signature and Comment tab and add your specs in  the box there.  Under the box where you entered your system specs is a check box to always attach your signature to your posts.  Make sure that box is checked, and then any post you put forth from this point forward will contain your system specs.

Thanks, Robert. I had entered that info, and as I mentioned above, I could in fact get it in the thread by clicking above the "picture frame" in the Author box...so I thought I was good. Thanks for the helpful info, and I'm now up-to-speed (I hope).

By the way, Kalle, , as I did mention in this thread above, I was able to get to that info in the Author box - and in fact included it again there in my reply - thought I was good. See if you can hear any difference in "tone" in Robert's reply.

Yeah. I'm a little cranky sometimes, though not at all a "record holder" in these forums in that respect :o). Sometimes I'm sorry about it, sometimes not.

It's mainly two things that trigger my crankyness: Questions with no info that makes answering possible and ones that could have been solved by the OP in one minute by typing the question title in SONARs Help files search field (not referring to you by this).

Life is hard and then you die....:o)
