Portland is 76.1% white.

MyTown is 76.9% white, but MyTown isn't large.
...

Portland is just a big small town! It has the tastes of the small towns in Western Oregon/Western Washington, because it doesn't know there is a world out there that has different music, arts, and some other differences.

Always had that problem at the International Film Festival here ... all the folks run for all the Brittish and American films ... and for crying out loud, those will all come out on DVD, or show up in a stream service ... nooooooooooo ... you still ignore all the other films from nowhereville around the world, and many of those films are a treat and then some.

Typical Portland, and the Oregonian and Willamette Week are responsible for that mentality of no mentality whatsoever ... just plain boring and second rate and popular second rate stuff run by people that have no idea what they are doing except counting chips and dollars ... so very like that other place, I guess!

Mosh,

Oregon is gorgeous, but as you say it's very provincial.  The people are provincial.  I lived on the east coast for 20 years and when I came back, well this is what I came back to....people with exceedingly high idealism (act locally, think globally).  They haven't yet realized how unempowering that attitude is.  When I mentioned that I was sick of the rain to this one space cadet, she looked up at the sky longingly and said:  *but, it makes...everything...GROW*.  We do have beautiful trees mosh.  :D:D

Yes, and chances are good she smokes a lot of what grows here.

Let's just say they are NOT followers of Ayn Rand's Objectivism philosophies.

I did a bit of time in Oregon.  The coast is a real treat.  The drive from Crescent City CA to Grants Pass was fawesome.  Unfortunately, Medford and Roseburg are the holes I spent the most time in.  I didn't get to spend any time in/around Portland at all.

Personally I'm totally done with non-objective girls (or non-objective anyone for that matter). Been out with a few in my time. What gets me is when you win an argument by using solid reason and they say "why do you always have to be right" as if it's a negative trait they'd prefer to iron out of you. I'm very lucky to be with a girl who appreciates logic now.

Promising "no dead white guys" will be there is like saying "no leprechauns". Concert, picnic or day at the beach, I think it's safe to predict neither will be showing up to interrupt the proceedings.

Maybe they think someone will bring Kurt Cobain to the show...

You're telling me? I only live across the river from Portland! It's why Craig doesn't even want a cup of java at that spend'y place!

Love this place, but its arts are ridiculous and the folks managing some of them are even worse. I keep hoping that folks like Craig, myself and others can stick together to better improve these things around here, but when separation and isolation is the idea and the mode (how Oregonian that is ... so no one knows you're smoking in the back door!) ... improving the arts is a joke. So the next Jazz festival will continue to have the same old crap it has had for 74 years! And no one knows anything or can say anything!

I'm actually distantly related to the guy who helped organize the Portland Baroque Orchestra.  That's a first class act.  But I know what you mean.  Nothing worse than  egalitarian musicians.  I mean really, think about it.  There's a hierarchy, with G at the top.  And G is NOT a man. :D:D
