I think I'm right in saying that Win 7 also has a backup/restore feature included.

It does, but AFAICT the problem with OS based backups is what happens when you can't get the system to boot? With Acronis (and I guess others) there is at least the ability to boot from a CD and run diagnostic tools and restore from there.

I don't use the Windows backup though so that scenario may well be covered.

Yes Karl, you're right there me old mucker.

I haven't used it myself or any other Windows backup formats.

Did you read my first post #10 :). Yes Windows backup has been around for a long time.
However it seems Windows 8 backup software is far superior than previous attempts , see post #11 for a link describing what this does. Microsoft is finally catching up.

I use Acronis 2011 and have done a successful restore of my C drive on my DAW.
I have a rotation of three backups to an external drive of all three of my drives.

I also use SyncToy on my projects folder to an external drive just to be "extra" safe.

+1 for Acronis 2011 AND for SyncToy!
Both work great on Windows 7 ~ and SyncToy is free!!

Now I mostly use the win 7 imager for the OS disks. And create the repair disk for restoring.

The trick is to rename the image folder so it does not get written over next time.

The w 7 imager always wants to include the OS disk, so, when imaging non-OS disks I use macrium.

I also use the basic Sync Toy to copy new audio files to external disks. And the non-cw samples folders, and vst folder.

I create a new image for each of the OS disks in the music comp, after installing any major drivers, and OS updates. Only takes about 30 minutes per disk with verification.

I used the backup app in Vista 64 bit and it worked fine.

The backup in Windows 8 is supposed to be better than what was in Windows 7. I haven't use it yet but if it works as well as the one did in Vista it'll be fine.
